T 1 1 11 fall-wint- er When Calvin Klein NEW YORK was moving swiftly up the fashion ladder a dozen years ago and was asked the reason for his success, he said. I lry ,0 m;jle clothes women Like to wear. He's still doing it. rM His fall and winter collection was shown for the first resounding success of the current week of fashion openings on Seventh Avenue. It was unpretentious in that there was no apparent cerebral analysis of the current state of fashion, no obvious revivals of the past g and no straining to provide mind-bogglin- - ?nKs Life. ""U 3F .Ah sights. Most important, there was no vulgarity. He presented relatively simple clothes at least they looked simple. He had a definite point of view; the skills were long, the jackets were tailored and the shapes were slender. Klein went back to the original concept that dominated liis early collections. He concentrated on making coats and suits, and a good many women in his audience asserted that they would like to wear them. Designer in Control From the first group of black and white checked suits and the black gabardine styles, all with skirts and classic tailored jackets, it was clear that the designer was in control of his work. There was plenty of room for variations within the framework he had established, The jackets didnt all come close to the body ; they could be boxy or bloused. In fact, they could be dispensed with. The designer presented enough pretty blouses, with tucked details or fluttering capelets, to make ellectivo outfits when they were paired skirts. A only with the black silk taffeta blouse with black and white speckled Donegal tweed skirt was only one of such combinations. vv ,V ' i T , Wa f I ... ' .. A navy blue jacket with toggle closing was as simple and dramatic as one could wish, shown over a silvery gray silk blouse and darker gray satin trousers. Klein proved it wasnt necessary to be gadgety to make a strong fashion statement. A navy blue tailored suit with a cascade of ivory ruffles in front drew one of the strongest roars of applause. Some of the coats were fitted and belted while others were squareshouldered and roomy without ever looking bulky. Wrapped sweaters nestling under these made up for the interlinings of the past. Shortest Clothes The shortest clothes in the collection were the dinner dresses in fuchsia or black satin. There were long satin dresses as weli, but the beaded black crepe evening styles with motifs on one shoulder were too matronly to be completely successful. And a wrapped blouse with long ties to twine around the waistline looked too complicated to manage. But these arc quibbles in a masterly collection of clothes that defines the way many women would like to dress today. Tailored Emphasis In a more limited area, Bill Blass achieved much the same results in hi separates collection for Blassport. Again the emphasis was on tailoring d fabrics as gray and such flannel and black velvet. While there was an occasional trick, such as the green plaid skirt with its fringed hemline in handkerchief points, most of the styles were honest and straightforward. Big, bold plaids in pleasant colors on soft woolens lent a lively note to the collection, but a camel-hai- r jacket with gray flannel pants was equally effective. Blass has injected his own touch of class to the fall showings. Something Else Diane Von Furstenberg is after something else again. Seductive may be the right word for her short, flounced shifts, smocks and dresses divided into Mondrian-lik- e blocks of color. The synthetic and silk jersey styles in a variety of prints bring up to date the styles she made popular a decade ago. Most of them fit so snugly they leave little to the imagination. d WaHiu designs H orn Calvin Kleins fall - winter fashion collection. Casual Ground Robert Codinas sportswear separates for Betty Hanson cover a lot of ground in a more casual area. His embroidered suede skirts and jackets are distinctive; so are his mohair coats, so filmy they seem airborne. The designer has the knack of making attractive blouses that tie his separates together for a cohesive outfit. The most ambitious are emboidered with Art Deco motives. In gray crepe with gray satin trousers, these blouses suggest an offbeat way of dressing up at night. Berry walnut diorleake Strawberry shortcake? Try a little eiiuichiuess.
