Show I The Salt Lake Tribune, Saturday, April 2 21, 1982 Garden Clubs date events By Genevieve H Folsom Tribune Garden Editor The Utah Associated Garden Clubs will hold a fund raising event for the Garden Center Saturday May Irom 9am to pm Mrs emergency fund 1 5 Howell Denny Wagner is chair- man m charge of the que arrange-imnt- s for BoutiII A light lunch will be served from noon There to 3 p m Will be numerous items for sale including plants, candy, baked goods paintings handicraft items home canned goods, white elephants There will be old tmngs new things and original things, Mrs Wagner announced The public is invited If you have articles you wish to donate, contact Mrs W'agner Mary Hayhurst or Leona Holt, director of the Garden Clubs Center 'The spring convention of the Utah Associated Garden Clubs is being held Saturday at the Garden Clubs Center Mrs David Greenhalgh will be in charge of the meeting which will feature reports from club presidents Also at the Garden Clubs Center, 1602 E 21st South in Sugarhouse Park, the Utah Associated Garden Clubs Garden Center Memorial Fund will benefit from a course by Gertrude Glauser, noted flower designer She will teach a six week course m the basic principles and elements of flower arrangement and table settings, along with student participation during the workshop period Classes will be held in the Garden Clubs Center at 1 p m on the following Tuesdays May 11 18 25 Jane 8 15,22 Cost of the six week course will be $15 or $3 per single class In charge of the prneram are Mrs William J Bullough and Mrs Maola Rider Students are askd to bring notebook flowers and contain r Plant Sale One of the most popular events a the Garden Clubs Center is the annual Wasatch Mens Garden Clubs plant sale to be held May 11 at 7 pm, according to Newell Mitchell president As most of these garden club members are superb growers, there will be lots of beautiful plants available League elects officers The Salt Lake League of Women Voters elected and installed Nanette Benowitz presi- $ dent at its annual meeting at Three ff Fountains Eastgfs. Clubhouse Other officers are Sandy Peck, second v ice president, Jean Weston, secretary, and Nancy Mel-lin- treasurer Two-yea- r di- Mrs. Benowitz rectors are Julie Loker, Ethelyn Stephanie Bryant, Turner and Kay Veltn Becky Domino Marian Sullivan will serve one year terms Pat Bnm is chairman of the nominating committee, assisted by Deborah Aiona and Suzan Lynch The league decided on three study programs for the 1982 83 year 1 The study of the local sewage treatment services, the impact of the loss of federal funds , and the pollution of the Jordan River 2 Study the effect of the changmg federal policy on local social service programs (especially mental health and welfare) 3 Survey, study and evaluate the structure, function and finances of the local league for the purpose of effective future planning id Proceeds from the sale will be used for club projects Have you thought about coleus for your problem shady spots in the garden7 You will enjoy their different leaf patterns and exotic color combinations They can be grown from seed or you can purchase plants from your nurseryman or garden supply dealer for setting out into the garden m mid May There are many delightful colois in these lovely shade plants the dliferent shades of green, of course, then salmons, bright rose, deep crimsons and the golds There are other colors as well Interesting Effects You can use coleus in many spots w ith interesting eflects They look well underneath trees, such as the clump birch, or placed m the borders in a shady area Burpee has a ccleus called Paislev Patches, a blend of color combinations ranging from soft pastels to brilliant strong hues Impatiens are beautiful for t,ie shady garden where they bnng color that lightens up any spot Used in place of tuberous rooted begonias, they will cost less because they are sold as bedding plants m flats or containers Planning Utah Associated Garden Clubs fund- raising event are Mrs. Leslie Holt, left, Mrs. Plant Begonias Another flower for the shade garden is the fibrous rooted begonia These are the lovely, colorful flowers so often seen in formal park plantings There are green and bronze foliaged types The colors are red, rose, pink or white As with the impatiens you can obtain fibrous rooted begonias in dwarf sizes as well as taller types Plant these flowers m window boxes or containers as well as in the gaiden You will probably want to wait and purchase these shade plants as plants from your nurseryman rather than start them from seed It takes about eight to 10 weeks to start them from seed However, if you still want to do this you should plant them m a sterilized planting material and cover lightly Keep the planting material just moist, not soggy They like a temperature of around 70 to 75 degrees to germinate You can grow the seedlings on a sunny windowsill Howell Denny Wagner, Mrs. Bill T. Anderson Fvent is set for May 1 More on shelf paper DEAR HELOISE : We have just become new homeowners The kitchen cabinet shelves in our new house were covered with some smelly, stained, adhesive-backe- d paper that refused to budge I tried peelmg it and scraping it off and all I got for my efforts were broken fingernails and frazzled nerves I then remembered reading m your column that if the paper were softened, it would peel off more readily So, I got out my dry iron and the aluminum foil and tried it It worked1 Do a small section at a time, using a small piece of foil with your iron set on a low temperature You have to move quickly, for if the paper cools, it again becomes difficult to remove Repeat this process until the shelves of the paper When I did mine.
