Show CORRUPT PRACTICE ACT INTRODUCED IN SENATE v Fourteen new bills were presented in j the Utah upper house Wednesday after- j noon and referred to committees for j consileration. One of the most im- i portant was a corrupt practice act by J Senator Chez. The measure limits , campaign contributions of each candi- j date to an amount not more than 20 per cent of the first yearly salary for the ; 0. 11ce sought. Expenses lor elections i may be incurred only by candidates, their duly appointed ugents or the po-: litical campaign committee of the party ! of which the candidates are members, j Campaign expenses are definitely limit- ed to not more than 20 per cent of the j aggregate of the first year's salaries of j the men to be elected. Cigars, candy and treating to drinks are prohibited. Automobiles or carriages may be used I w.ihout banners or workers, for the purpose of sick or feeble voters to and I fium the polls. Lists of polhical agents j must be filed with state officials and an 1. emized account of the expenses sworn t) and tiled with the proper officials. In regard to coutributions the bill ! i siys: i "No person shall ask, demand or invite in-vite any payment or contribution for j any religious, political, charitable or s cial or other cause or organization j supposed to be primarily for the public ! good from a person who seeks to t b- or has been nominated or elected to any office," and it further provides that Hj candidate shall make any such pay-1 ment asked while he is a candidate, or wnile he is hoLing office. On election day no workers are allow-ei allow-ei except two challengers at each polling poll-ing place. Persons wno violate any of the provisions of the bill are guilty of ci nupt practice and are liable fora tine of $10,000 and one year's imprisonment or i,. case of a corporation a fine of not more than $100,000. Officers or corporations corpora-tions found guilty are liable to a fine of not more than $5,000 and one year imprisonment im-prisonment or both. Senator Chez introduced an initiative anl referendum bill which provides that fie per cent of tne voters may call an e action and two per cent may refer laws. The bill extends the same rights t all political subdivisions with reference refer-ence to state statutes, ordinances, resolutions reso-lutions and franchises. |
