Show A TREE WITH A HISTORY V av A 1 elea WA 1 az 10 S iff i 1 R I 1 1 1 V EA lii 1 k A celii te 1 I 1 tin the above photograph shows the dew deuey ey spring now the property of C J dewey son of the man who first located at that spot and who was the pioneer of Dewe deweyville the late bp george eorge dewey moved from the south to Dewcy ville or rather to the spot represented in the cut above in the year 1863 and the family was then practically on the outskirts of civilization for there were ere no other families residing north of brigham excepting the families of hampton ampton li and dempcy who wore located at the present crossing over hear bear river near Colllns ton and they operated a ferry hut but that does not enter so much into this choit sketch in the above cut a giant cottonwood can call be seen in the center of tile the picture arid the suns rays reflect its shadow in the clear waters of the spring at its feet that tree has a history as many trees in this state have bild it is regarded by the descendants nf t the late bishop dewey with a great deal of affection when dishop bishop dewey stopped his ox team by the side of the spring lie he carried a branch of Cotton cottonwood Nood as a whip which he had used in encouraging his cattle along the route and as tile the caravan came to a halt bishop denn dewey ey jabbed the stick into the soft ground and left it standing As the family had reached its destination the oxen v vere ere turned out to graze and activities tivi tivit ties les commenced yn in the erect erection Jon of a homo home and and the laying ot of the foundation ot of a community the persuader had no part in these labors so it was left sticking in the mud unnoticed I 1 but the stick resolved not to pass I 1 into ignominious oblivion after having baving served so useful a purpose in assisting the danily to arrive at its destination tin ti nation atlon and so it became encouraged I 1 by the soft earth which clung to it and began to send forth tiny tentacles which gathered strength to the stock resulting finally sp ill the appearance ol of small buds which in turn burst into tiny leaves and then grew crew to branches when the dewys saw the transformation of the cattle whip they determined to encourage the stick so that it might some day serve to shelter them from the hot rays of the sun as well as add to tile beauty ot of the scene surrounding i the pond and so BO the whip grew to be a tree and stands today like a sentinel amidst a beautiful grove which shades the waters voters of the pond and makes delightful the homo home of thousands of sportive trout which the present owner has planted in tile the cool waters the pioneer tree Is hale bale and hearty at the age of 49 years and gives promise of offering shelter for generations yet unborn |
