taja th a above computation the 11 irry arry L line no owned by perry residents has 32 subscribers ibers now each of those subscribers would undoubtedly bo be willing to pay 70 cents per month for the privilege of exchange connection with bigham br aham city which would mean an income labome of 2240 per month or annually an arrangement could also undoubtedly bo made with the bear ry riser r valley telephone company for OrL exchange hinge servi ceso that the local exchange would include perry brigham and the bear river valley in the western vart part 0 ot box elder coun county ty two ucal phone lines have been installed ono one from to and the other from grouse creek to lucin valley citizens are now agitating tho the matter of purchasing a wire from tho union telegraph from brigham to kelton which they would extend from kelton to park valley and possibly yost and junction thus giving ina box elder county a pretty complete telephone connection with the outside world ill fit the matter of long distance service tho the telephone companies are common carriers just as aa the railroads aro are and their toll rates tor for long distance blanp communication or beyond the local territory ire by the in ter commerce commission so chaj tha if this community operated its telephone system the long distance service would bo be no more eapen lat than tt it is now and it would be ava aral ablo any and all the time by operating a phone system in connection with the light plant a great deal of expense could be saved in the i matter of wes poles and labor for each system would use the samo poles and the linemen ot of the two systems would take care of the replacing at af all poles stringing wire etc NIt without hout the necessity of extra help required when each system Is operated by a se company and not only that but the figures above include a reduction of phone service for residences to ou oua dollar per month or twelve dollars per year and there is hardly a family in the community that could not afford to install the phone at those rates after a time when the thing got going nicely it is very possible that even a give a handsome profit on the investment the businessmen and single party line users would save a dollar per month by using the municipal phone and by reason of using K K wire twisted into a cable the efficiency would be increased many many times brigham city has had a splendid training in municipal ownership it would be b hard indeed to convince any resident of this city that municipal ownership of waterworks water works and electric lights is not a good thing for both the people and the city facts are arc hard to controvert and even those who were opposed to bonding the city for these purposes in the beginning have been more than satisfy satis flod with the results and are now among the most enthusiastic bastic for municipal ownership in these matters the figures given 1 above I have been compiled from a barj careful study of the proposition and can be relied upon where is the busina business man who would hesitate to launch out in any industry that would NET him 1326 annually on an investment of these things being true is it not worth these things being true it it not worth while for brigham city to consider carefully this matter before any action is taken relative to granting a franchise to the corporation now doing business in our midst the city owns its own poles has a building where the exchange could be installed thus eliminating rent has demonstrated that municipal ownership is a paying proposition and now we havo have an opportunity to install another municipal public utility let the people be called together and counsel in the matter the following expressions expression fr from om some of the leading caz citizens 0 of floi abe city indicate their feelings in this matter I 1 worked for municipal ownership of our water works I 1 worked for municipal ownership of our electric lights I 1 am still in the faith and will work for municipal ownership of 0 our telephone system JOHN D PETERS if municipal ownership of a telephone exchange Is feasible then brigham city is in in better condition to install such a system than most towns of its size owing to the tact fact their is a complete system ot of pole lin lins liars s thru out the city upon which the municipal light wires are strung it is a matter that should be thoroughly investigated vesti gated however before any action is taken E W DUNN I 1 have always been in favor of the city sty owning its own telephone plant and am still of that mind we would have installed one a few years ago had bad we been able as a city council to see our way clear in th metter of providing ly IY in favor of it T II if BLACKBURN 4 4 A municipal telephone will have my hearty support I 1 am satisfied fled brigham city can install and maintain a system that will save the tha people money nod and py pay the city a profit on the investment C W KNUDSON t 4 I 1 favor municipal ownership and think that the mayor and city counell council ought to appoint a committee to go into the matter ot of municipal telephone thoroughly so as to determine dete ami i ne the cost 0 of installing the system expense of main maintains taing and the revenue also matter or of raising funds necessary to mako make the investment OLEEN N STOHL I 1 think a municipal telephone would bo be the finest thing in tho the world tor for brigham city im sure it would bo be a paylag proposition and I 1 am heartily in favor of it F N W FISHBURN I 1 have given the matter of municipal telephone no consideration and be aleve therefore that I 1 am not capable of expressing intelligent opinion on the subject it would seem however that it would only bo be prudent to proceed slowly and not rush the city into the he telephone business simply because the th franchise of the present company has expired experience has demonstrated that private corpora eions handle business much cheaper than can governmental corporations private contractors have offered to carry and distribute the U S malls for several millions of dollars less each year than is now costing the government itself whether or not the city could erect and carry on the business ot operating opera tinK a telephone system tem is a quest question lon of doubt A false sense of patriotism and sentiment should not be allowed to enter in and interfere with the deciding of so important a question citizens and taxpayers tax payers having the real interest ot of the city at heart should decide the matter solely as i matter of tact fact business proposition I 1 know of no cities large or small that are at this time successfully op crating a municipal telephone system there have been one or two experiments in the state of private companies abose stockholder stock holder might bo be said to represent fairly well the same spirit as is evidenced in the municipal idea that have been failures it if favorable terms to the city could be had in a new franchise to the present company I 1 would be inclined to entertain the matter favorably the city itself has all kinds of opportunities to expend its credits nud and energies in bettering and improving its ets alleys and sidewalks and new ventures of a semiprivate semi private nature should be taken up only when all hope of safe guarding the cites best interests fail J E II IT ALVERSON I 1 think every public utility should belong to the public we are pleased with our municipal light system we are pleased with our municipal water works and ne ae will bo be as well pleased with a municipal telephone conducted eon ducted on the same economical conservative lines as our public affairs have always been administered in brigham I 1 favor a direct tax we should be willing to tax ourselves one year in order to enjoy the benefits during the years to come WYNN L EDDY I 1 think it would be a mighty good thing W C HORSLEY A mighty good thing boost the e proposition for all youre worth N J VALENTINE f t I 1 am heartily in favor of a municipal telephone attorney NELS JENSON I 1 have always been in favor of the city owning its own telephone system H C BODEN I 1 favor municipal paA ownership every time and it if a telephone system can be installed without too heavy a direct tax I 1 shall support it JOHN P christensen t I 1 think we ou ought ht to have one A LISLE EDDY ti think it would be a splendid scheme county commissioner 11 S LARSEN I 1 think we ought to control the things which effect ourselves and our children after us where it la Is possible and I 1 bell believe e v e t that h at w we 0 could control many of these things if wo we would be a little more united and all pull together I 1 favor building up our own community and the community owning the things which tend to its welfare JOSEPH YATES it if anyone can give a logical reason against a municipal telephone being installed in brigham city I 1 have not heard it and in my opinion there are just two reasons why we do not own our own telephone namely tho the in telegraph company JOSEPH josepin F 4 S since I 1 broached the subject ot of a municipal telephone system for our town some two or three weeks ago I 1 have been approached by several influential fluent ial citizens whose views accord exactly with mine since we are entering into this matter so I 1 think the accomplishment of a local system Is only a matter of time however wo we must uso use duo due caution and determine to our entire satisfaction that the project Is feasible before we spend any money I 1 have had the matter in mind and have investigated municipal telephone systems in a desultory sort ot of way for some years and the proposition looks so good to mo me that I 1 think we should lose no time la in getting one established provided of courso course as I 1 said before that we are completely convinced that it will be a practical thing for or our town from figures that I 1 have seen on this subject we can support just as good an exchange as we need with rental charges reduced at ai least one third which Is no small item to business men who in many cases maintain two or even three phones the line work operated in connection with our electric light system would it seems to me materially reduce the cost of such maintenance in both departments and increase the efficiency because men in one department could assist those in the other whenever occasion required relieving us of 0 tho the cost ot of extra men whenever extra work Is to be done I 1 have no doubt that lormer former city officials could give us much information on this subject as I 1 understand that under two administrations at least the matter was vas very seriously considered
