Show fy (f1l1 jig - ! i4 'A 'J' ’ V BOW Kfl Kit Wr reap babtt reap charactrr SALT LAKE CITY SUNDAY MORNING Every Child Can Have Own Fruit Garden ii I t So many of our readers live in small towns or on farms or ranches and have an intimate knowledge of fruit and Us value that It is almost unnecessary to point out any additional advantages to be gained from fruit— the subject we are Interested in this week But perhaps looking out of our office window onto the roofs and walls of office buildings we may have some inspiration that will give a new idea even to those who raise fruit for a living For the city child we have two or three splendid suggestions One of these we ran across In a magazine years ago when we were very young end we tried it out with such great success that all the neighbors copied our scheme and strawberry barrels became as common on our street as were ash cans It was simply this: Fill an old barrel with good sandy soil Drill large holes here and there over the sides Stand the barrel In a sunny spot In each hole put a strawberry plant and put several at the top Now this strawberry barrel can be watered with the hose or if one lives m an apartment and has the barrel on the back porch water from the kitchen faucet can be taken through a tiny length of hose to the “garden ” The vines will grow and supply some delicious breakfasts Another suggestion is taken from "Apple Seed John” — you know the story as you read it in the third grade Plant your apple cores and some of them will grow By the way grapefruit orange and lemon seeds planted in small ots in the house give delightful little trees although they bear no fruit It is now too late to plant trees but make up your mind that if you do not own a fruit tree of your very own this year you will next Decide what it shall be and start saving your You will be more than pennies proud to pick your own fruit and perhaps can sell enough to give you a little pin money If you are especially interested In nature study and growing things why not read this issue of your little paper carefully and then of your own accord try some experiments with fruit It may be the developing of a special kind as Burbank did or finding a new use for fruit or as working out new combinations Fames suggests or any other experiment with fruit as the motif Make friends with fruit—know It and like it TOMATOES Tomatoes are considered a fruit by some and a vegetable by others Some eat tomatoes with cream and sugar and others eat them plain or with salt Some make jellies and preserves of them while others use them for relishes or catsup If I had to decide I don’t know whtich I would call them Vegetable or fruit’ Which?
