famous baby’s body was found told how the infant had been killed and where the battered little form had been hidden There is a possibility this unnamed character may hold the key to the secrets of what is already one of the world's strangest crime mysteries He has boasted it was disclosed today that he knows several of the band who perpetrated the fiendish kidnaping and killing -Jafsie” Makes Secret Trip As new light was thrown on this mysterious gangster” now sought throughout the east John Hughes Curtis “hoax negotiator” conferred in his jail cell at Flemington with an attorney and "Jafsie” the ransom-paye- r went dashing through New England on an unexplained mission The lawyer who visited Curtis was from the shipbuilder's home town of Norfolk Va After he left it was learned two local attorneys had been engaged They were expected to make early efforts to obtain the prisoner’s release on bail At the tame time another of the bills used in paying the $50000 ransom was reported to have turned up t a New York bank Direct confirmation of the report vas lacking'1 Given "Real Significance” The two-dahunt for the man identified by state police only as “a gangster reported in Maryland and thought to be connected with the case" was given real significance by Arthur Mills identification expert at the Maryland house of correction At Baltimore Mills refused to identify the fugitive but said he is a character long identified with the liquor traffic in New Jersey Two days before the broken body of Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr was found by chance in the woods five miles from his parents’ estate the rum runner discussed the mystery with Mills He told the identification expert the child had been killed by blows on the head and hidden within five miles of where the kidnaping occurred Several Reported Involved He said Mills repeated that three or four persons had been Involved in the crime and that he knew several of them He prefaced these disclosure with a complaint that police activities in the case were hampering his liquor business “If somebody doesn’t do something about the case soon I will" Mills quoted the man as saying “I didn’t pay any attention to it at the time" Mills said “but later when I read that the body had been found I communicated my information to Colonel H Norman Schwarzkopf of the New Jersey state police “Two officers came here yesterday to investigate it” Although the rum runner’s name has not been made public those hunting him know his identity Search Continues Mills said he first became acquainted with him when more than a score of men were arrested at Ocean City Md in December 1929 while attempting to land a cargo of liquor on the beach The only information concerning the progress of the search came from Colonel Schwarzkopf in his morning bulletin which said: "Investigators who are investigating the wheieabouts of the gangster reported In Maryland and thought to be connected with the case have been unable to locate him as yet and are continuing their negotiations” In a later bulletin he said: “Ming Ling is not the name of the Fifteen Escape Injury as Crash Plunges Workers in Water COPPER LEVY LINEUP PROBLEM Scaffold 21-- y (Continued on Pave Seven) (Column One) West Solons Confident of Success Coal Tax Fails to Benefit Utah (Sntelal ta The Trlbane) WASHINGTON May 21-- fact The that the senate has agreed to amend- ments to the tax bill imposing tariffs on oil and coal convinces western senators that the copper tariff when reached next week also will be agreed to On every test in the finance com mittee copper has proven stronger than either oil or coal and this relative strength is believed to hold good in the senate Friends of copper will be content to hold the tariff at 4 cents and not undertake to raise the rate for fear of endangering the entire amendment The coal tariff as written Into the bill Friday night is of no benefit whatever to Utah In that It carries the Reed amendment exempting Canadian coal from its provisions and the Smoot amendment is wholly missing Proviso Offset Benefit The coal clause which the senate adopted provides: "Coal of all sizes grades and classifications coke manufacturerd therefrom' and coal or coke briquettes 10 cents per hundred pounds The tax on th articles described in this paragraph shall apply with respect to the importation of such articles and shall not be imposed upon any such article if during the preceding calendar year the exports of the articles from the United States to the country from which such article is imported have been greater in quantity than the imports of such articles into the United States from such country" The proviso which is the Reed amendment was shown in debate specifically to exempt Canadian coals of all classifications from the tax of $2 a ton Senator Reed explained that the United States exports to Canada 11 to 13 million tons of American coal each year and last year imported but 160000 tons from Canada a large part of the imports going into Spokane and eastern Washington territory where Utah coal formerly found a wide market As the provision now stands the $2 tax will be levied prin cipally upon anthracite coal from Wales and from Russia King Questions Constitutionality Senator King as in committee questioned the constitutionality of the Reed amendment and because of it refused to vote for the coal tariff Senator Smoot's amendment drafted at the instance of the Utah Coal Producers’ association clarifying the classification of coals so as to make certain that British Columbia lignite would be taxed was not brought before the senate and is not a part of the coal clause Not being in the bill it cannot be considered by the conference committee The Smoot amendment was nullified by the Reed amendment anyway hence the coal tariff Is of no benefit to Utah or Wyoming Sharp Exchange Revealed The Congressional Record discloses that last night Senator Smoot ard Senator Tydings of Maryland had a tart exchange when the Marylander offered 500 tariff amendments to the tax bill Senator Smoot urged that Tydings let the senate proceed to vote on his amendments without further debate “The senator from Utah” said Tyd ings "has got himself into this fix by letting the copper interests of Utah stand out bigger than his country in this period of emergency and he the leader of the finance committee” "I deny 'that statement” retorted Smoot "The senator is absolutely I have never asked for a wrong duty on copper Copper has been on (Continued on Pule Seven) jColumn
