I’ll tell you Gordon Aunt Elda and Cousin Nona had invited them to come to their ranch In Idaho and stay all summer Thelma and Velma were twins They were 11 going on 12 years Nona was 11 too and the three girls loved each other dearly and were happy when they were together At last the happy day arrived when they would start Mother father and little brother Ralph were down to the station to bid them good bye fI other gave them a nice lunch to eat on the way Father gave them each 20 cents to spend on the train for or whatever they fruit candy wished Ralph gave them each a lollipop He always seemed to have hii pockets full of such things It was 'quite a long ride to Sunshine Ranch and the twins made use of the money their father had given Ihein y As our subject this week was Knighthood of Youth our essayist wrote on the advantages of the club to its members That they feel these advantages and use them to develop themselves speaks well for the sincerity of our young people It is one thing to know that there is an organization for building character It is far different and more noble thing to do the dally work of such an organization m order to develop our own appetites The next day the ghls decided that In the afternoon they would go up to the hills and have a picnic The cook packed a delicious lunch for them because their appetites seemed unduly large on Sunshine Ranch They climbed the hill then ate and rested Then they began to look around After walking a short way they heard a "chirp chirp" “That Sounds like a bird” said Thelma “It is" said Mona “But birds ars plentiful here Come on let’s pick some wild flowers” “No" said Velma “I want to find that bird It sounds different to me” Then Mona and Thelma went to pick flowers but Velma looked for the bird "Oh there it Is” she cried running over and kneeling down on tha grass "Oh girls come here” she called "I’ve found it” Thelma and Mona ran over to where Velma was kneeling “Oh the poor thing!" said Thelma It has hurt Its wing” The bird was a beautiful blue with grayish-whitbreast “Oh that’s our state bird” said Nona — “It’s the Rocky Mountain bluo e bird” The girls wrapped It carefully In a napkin and took It home They nursed It until it was well When they let it go It flew away but soon It returned He didn’t come back alone but with a mate And soon little birds were singing In the big tree near the house!
