SUNDAY MORNING APRIL 17 TITE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE SEMINARY SOON Of Various Districts County Assessor Preece believes’ that the assessed valuation of prop- erty in Salt Lake City will have decreased considerably more than 000 when the 1932 assessment rolls are compaied with those for 1931 A which totaled $174 191753 deuease of $3 051 000 In the assessed vjlua'ion of tangible property within the city will bring the average valuation for eoth of the 34 281 children of school age in the city to less than $i000 At present it is $5081 when the total assessed value for last year Is divided by the school population for last year Decrease In stocks kept by merchants the elimination of all intangible property from the assessment rolls and other adjustments are believed by Mr Preece as likely to reduce the total valuation of the city There is not much indication the state tax commission will find many reasons for increases in the assessed values of tangible property owned by utilities A decrease of 2 per cent in assessed values in the city would be moi e than sufficient to bi mg the assessed valuation per child to less than $5000 Law Limits Levy The state law requires in urban distiicts a maximum levy for support and buildings of 9 mills when the valuation per child is in excess of $5000 but permits 10 mills for these purposes when the assessed values run between $4000 and $5000 The average valuation is determined at the time the assessment is completed which will be next July or early in August The school population figures used are the latest available those of the school census of the preceding October In Jordan district the decreased valuation of the ore content of metal mines as fixed by the state constitution and the laws will be respon-- s ble for a heavy decrease in valuation per capita Based on last year’s assessment figures and those of last j ear’s census Jordan district has an average valuation per school child of $5873 The valuation of tangible property in the district was $15 863 and the school population was 6106 But Jordan will lose $10762-67- 6 in assessed value from the drop in net proceeds of one mine alone the Utah Copper If the total valua tion falls this year below $24 424000 the valuation per child will be less than $4000 In rural districts for valuations between $3000 and $4000 per child the levy of 8 5 mills for support and buildings is permitted Between $4000 and $5000 it is 7 5 and above $5000 it is 7 mills The law fixes other rates for 'other valuations and also permits a maximum levy equal to that of 1922 if that was aY' $?
