Show BIENNIAL REPORT OF EMERY COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT The Board of Education of Emery County meet the first Tuesday in each month. When necessity arises the president has the power to call special meetings. Although twelve regular meetings and four special meetings have been hld during the past school year theie is a saving of $1991.18 when comparing the salary and expense of the Board of Education with the compensation compen-sation of the trustees of the old school districts. The book-keeping system outlined by the Goddary-Abbey Co. of Salt Lake City has been adopted iy the Board, and it is a decided advantage over systems previously used in the schools of the County. The clerk was appo nted as school supply purchaser, and as all supplies are purchased from the lowest bidder and accounted for, when used by each school a saving of several hundred dollars has been made. This is the first year in the history of Emery County that all the district schools have convened eight months. This has been done after paying $9203.07 floating indebtedness, submitted by the boards of old trustees, constructing construct-ing a new school building at Mohrland costing $6532.10 and employing sixty-one teachers, fifty-six of whom were employed for eight months, and five for nine months. Janitors are employed for the year which eliminates the employment employ-ment of extra people for cleaning and repairing the buildings previous to beginning begin-ning the school term. During the past year the duties of clerk and superintendent have been combined into one office. This has constituted the buying and distributing of -supplies to fifteen schools containing over 2300 students; the paying out, on an average, of nearly $8000.00 each month for teachers', janitors' and board members' mem-bers' salaries, and sundry bills; the employing of teachers and janitors, with the assistance of the board; and the supervision of schools. The duties of clerk will be independent of the office of superintendent this coming year, as there are no assistant supervisors employed for the latter office. The inadequacy of the supervisory super-visory force has always been handicapped throughout the county by incumbering the superintendent with other work, and expecting the principals to teach the two higher grades. No teachers are employed in the County who are not qualified according to state regulations. Twenty-eight per cent of our teachers in tne service last year were inexperienced, and about seventv-five per cent of the teachers maintained an attitude of improvement by either forming a local reading circle, taking the reading and study course, or engaging in correspondence work. The Board has adopted the sliding scale plan for determining teachers wages, the basis being experience, training and efficiency. The scale of wages ranges from $30. 00 to $100.00. t , . The Parents-Teachers League is still in its infancy, but several of our schools adopted this mode of uniting the parents and school. Enthusiastic meetings meet-ings were held each month and interesting problems of borne and school management manage-ment of the child were discussed in an informal way by all after subjects specially special-ly prepared had been rendered.
