ONE OF OUR STEWARDESSES IS ON DUTY TO ADMINISTER LAST RITES. THANK YOU ' Jiy Clarke Newspapers Writer Knight-Kidde- r THE WOMAN in the seat next to mine on the airplane couldnt keep still. She twisted in her seat, she frowned and she fidgeted. Her eyes darted here and there. She was obviously disturbed. A few minutes after we got airborne, we ran into what pilots like to call choppy weather, and the flight became somewhat bumpy. I glanced at the woman. She was hanging on to the armrest as hard as she could and I realized she was a white knuckler a person who is scared silly of flying. Our eyes met and I could see her rising panic, so the next time the plane hit a bump, I smiled at her and said, Youd think theyd pave these airways a little better, wouldnt you? Not a very sparkling line, but it broke the ice and got her to respond. I kept talking to her and after a while she began to relax. By the end of the trip, she was animated and watched the plane make its approach and land with healthy interest. We didnt talk about it, but my guess is that this was her first flight but not her last. When she finally got in the air and found flying was not the big bugaboo she had thought it was, her fears evaporated. BANISHING the fear of flying lifts a great load from those who for years have found excuses to avoid getting on an airplane. Some people wont even drive near an airport. These are many, many of these some 25 million, in the U.S. according to Capt. T.W. Slim Cummings of Pan American Airways. Cummings has a special interest in people who are afraid to fly because its his job to get rid of those fears. He teaches a Program for Fearful Fliers. For every person who comes to our classes, says Cummings, who has held the sessions in a number of cities, there are 30 who dont. Its an agonizing decision for them. Those who do come have finally decided they have to do something about their fear. Its become unbearable to dodge it any more. Others sign up for happier reasons. In Washington last month, Cummings related, "one of our class members was a new bride whose husband was being transferred to Indonesia. She looked up every boat passage to Indonesia, but found there was no way she could get there short of a month, white-knuckle- so she had to fly or stay home. She took the course and was ecstatic. THEN THERE was the groom-to-bCummings said, whose bride told him, Either we fly to Bermuda or theres no honeymoon. He took the course. Now we have a girl in our New York class whose boyfriend wants her to go with him to Europe and she is taking the course in order to make the trip, he said. e, WEVE ALSO signed up a man who wins free trips as a salesman and his wife has become disgusted because he wont take the trips and her along with him. Business reasons also rank high in the fearful fliers decision to take the big step. A physician in Detroit took the course because he couldnt attend medical meetings. Another was a travel agent who now travels far abroad. The most dedicated was a businessman in Ohio who drove 1,200 miles every week for six weeks to attend the sessions in Atlanta. I never knew anyone so motivated, Cummings said. Another incentive is the cost of the course $100. Theres a certain commitment about plunking down that kind of money, said Cummings. out-of-to- FEARFUL FLIERS meet roughly twice a week during the length of course. They listen to tapes, walk inside and outside aircraft, tour the FAA radar center and the airport control tower, climb aboard for a taxi ride and go through two mock takeoffs in a Boeing 707. Then comes graduation, when they board the plane for a real flight. Theres always a lot of tension before takeoff, Said Cummings, but afterward there are tears of joy. Cummings advises his students after graduation to fly again within two or three weeks, to keep a hand in it. I tell them to make little luncheon trips fly up to a nearby city and back. Its cheap. If it wipes out a fear thats gnawed at one for years, its a bargain at any price. Persons interested in information about the classes should write Capt.
