According to spokesmen for the commercial radio industry, you and your buddies havent gone 10-- 7 turned off on your favorite AM or FM station. BUT REPRESENTATIVES of the CB industry say the 23 million CB sets you guys are using must have some impact drive-tim- e on the radio audience. No one, however, seems to have any reliable statistics to show whether you are listening more to your CB than your favorite disc jockey. The only factual evidence we have are the Arbitron surveys which have shown no evidence of any decrease in the listening audiences, says Charles T. Jones, vice president for radio of the National Association of Broadcasters. JIM GABBERT, PRESIDENT of the National Radio Broadcasters Association, agrees but adds: Of course, you could say it (the audience) might have increased faster. Who knows? And Miles David, president of the Radio Advertising Bureau, says his trade associations very subjective study shows: If all the CB car radios were in use at the same time, that would reduce total radio listening time by less than of one percentage point. On the other hand, John Passini, general marketing manager for Dynas-caCorp., manufacturer of Cobra brand CBs, says: We know commuters are using their CBs instead of their regular radios. They arent buying all those CB radios just to let them sit in the car and not use them. cross-countr- one-tent- h n , AND SAYS A SPOKESMAN Motorola, which makes both CBs and and FM car radios, Weve found that most people who have CB radios spend less time with their broadcast radios when they drive to and from work. The Electronic Industries Assn., a trade group representing most CB manufacturers, estimates one in every 10 passenger cars is equipped with a CB radio. At the same time, the RABs David says 95 per cent of all cars on the road have regular AM or FM radios. OBVIOUSLY, THERES a lot of But the CBs, says NABs Jones. larger the city, the more clutter on CB channels. People turn off to that quickly and turn back to where the news, music and traffic reports are. And thats regular radio. The NftBAs Gabbert adds: The CB band is so cluttered that people play with it for a while, then abandon it. CBs play a more important role, travel y Gabbert says, in as a motorist aid in obtaining traffic and Smokey police reports and assistance in highway emergencies. Jones says We had a great deal of over possible CB concern initially erosion of commercial radio audiences. But since then, he adds, many stations have turned CBs to their advantage. He cites WMAL in Washington as ar example of stations across the country then have turned to organized CB dubs for information contained in their drive-tim- e traffic reports. Gabbert also notes how commercial stations are using CB. "At my station in Hawaii KIKI in CB Honolulu, we are interfaced with clubs which feed us traffic information, he says. vWe eventually dropped our use of our traffic helicopter. AM , for |
