| Show ije calt galit ztibunt -- Lifestyle SIMEIMIE -- Friday Morning—August 17 1990 Section A Page 16 Designer's counsel: Think big go for it ' By Carolyn Monson Tribune Fashion Editor David Snyder approaches interior design the same way he lives — all out "It might have something to do with my size" he said in a telephone interview from his office in the Marshall Field's flagship department store Chicago He's 6 foot 3 weighs 230 pounds and feels the best advice he can give anyone contemplating a design project is to "think big and go for it — dare to be different" Mr Snyder vice president of merchandising for 12 years is about to have a book published by Forman Publishing Inc Los Angeles featuring his work It is due in bookstores in September The book's title Epoustoullant the final "t" is silent) is French and means in David Snydereze "Anything that knocks you out" When asked if people might refer to it as the "E" book he said "Only if they don't know how to say it" He intends that all learn the word and use it "It wasn't that long ago that few knew the meaning of eclectic Epoustouflant will be the new eclectic" The word came from a friend and colleague Mr Snyder explained "The friend had just come back from a trip to France and said 'I found a word that describes your designs' I loved it and decided to adopt home-fashio- n it" The book is a collage of his depart i 0 Chicago designer David Snyder Is author of book Epoustouflant displays Twice a year for the last 10 years he and his staff have designed built and furnished Trend Houses several rooms of epoustouflant fashion in the flagship store When completed the store invites Chicago to an open house If there's a trend to his Trend Houses since themes change with each season it is his element of surprise The Northern Italian collection features his "invented" color on the walls ceiling and carpet He calls it He used Ely for black lacquer moldings accented leaf designs with His High Country West theme featured split logs applied to rough plaster walls and curved traditional couches upholstered in Pendleton Indian blankets His next Trend House open house is Oct 3 It's theme is Epoustouflant Russian Dacha It is his last Marshall Field's was recently purchased by Dayton Hudson Corp and Mr Snyder will change careers "It's time Change keeps life from becoming boring I have spent longer at Field's than anywhere else In January 1 will be opening my own consulting business and I'm excited" He'll call his business Epoustouflant He wants people excited about where they live Mr Snyder would like to see American homes turned into what he calls a "theater-of-livin- g fantasy" in which consumers might best reflect their individuality and personality "The home presents the one major opportunity to create a background for ourselves to create a context which complements us We should live as beautifully as we dress "We change clothes twice a day People change their homes every 20 years Some never make a change" He isn't suggesting that people reupholster every six months or throw out everything and start over "Economics dictates otherwise" he said an added But a little change piece rearrangement a new accessory represents excitement "Don't always play it safe "You know on a test the first answer that comes to mind is usually the right one Well the bold way is probably the best way as well "Think big" A current project is the apartment of Ardis Kranik general director of the Chicago Lyric Opera Mr Snyder has completed the design using 18th century furniture He is now overseeing the installation of custom-mad- e Chinese screens that cover all walls in her living and dining roon and go from ceiling to floor "Her home is a backdrop for her and her guests who include all the opera greats" At 53 Mr Snyder said his daring nature is in his genes "I was a middle child in a family that refinished houses I grew up painting and sanding old houses next to my father My mother liked to work outside in gardens My father ment-stor- e David Snyder's American Country Barn room !'
