Show FARM NOTES. Look out for weevils In the grain. Some birds are on hand all the year to guard the crops and trees against the ravages of insects. Sweet potatoes must be dry before frost and when ground is dry plow them out or dig carefully with potato hook. One of the most serious leaks on the farm is in the poor care taken of farm implements when not in use. A little attention to' details pays big when you are, preparing your goods for market. Have you thought about putting up Ice next winter? Now Is the time to save straw and chaff to pack it In. The water In the cistern may be low and it should be cleaned well before be-fore the fall rains. Do not be In a hurry to bring in the pumpkins. They will rot if housed too early. Put up one-third more feed than you think you can use. Then you will have have enough. MoBt people recognize the value of fall plowing for grain crops; but very few,- however, follow the practise with their corn crops. Weather prophets say we shall have lots of snow this winter. If this proves true, cornstalks pasture will not neip out much. Go" over the meadow with a harrow as early this month as possible. Are you planning to put up some ice this winter? If so, gave the flax chaff. It is cheaper than saw dust, and almost as good. , As the tools go under cover see that their polished surfaces get a coating of some protective material, as paint, or axle grease Onions for winter should be thoroughly thor-oughly dry spread them upon the top floor of seed-house. They should not be spread thicker than eight to ten inches, or they will heat; turn tha heap over once a week. |
