the CD and cassette versions Needless to say buy the LP if it still can be found Yet this loose atmosphere is built around a most austere format just Branford bassist Hinton (occasionally spelled by Delbert Felix) and Wynton's former drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts They seem to be running around trying to exhaust every possibility linear group — from this piano-les- s and the strain shows Though Branford is usually as inventive as ever he sometimes finds himself casting about trying to find the musical thread despite the diverse treatments of the tunes — lit-- erally from Hawkins to Coltrane — the playing of Watts and unflappable support from Hinton This pair of albums surely upsets the usual line on the Marsalis brothers for now Wynton is suddenly the more adventurous of the two It ought to be fun to see how this will goad one or the other brother on their next pair of albums It is corny and overbearing but not only does the preacher inspire the young musicians to blow and wail behind him he inspires the listener with his lashing words The only possible conclusion to this service must be a wake which they deliver in a marvelous shuffling Dixieland finale One can only wonder what Wynton is up to whether this album is a temporary archaeological dig or the embryo of an altogether new direction Whatever the ultimate goal this is his best album yet certainly his most surprising one Branford's set has all of the quirkiness to be expected from him by now lie leaves in a lot of goofy session as if talk frequently plays he were strolling around the studio and does a deliberately aimless false take on "Makin' Whoopee" on Side 2 before getting around to a real take on side three And in a deliciously perverse move the LP version has an extra selection — a tribute to the Coleman HawkinsBen Webster stylistic shackles buried himself in old Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton records and come out with a great new record disguised as a history lesson Adding a trombone and alto sax to his quintet — in which the amazing pianist Marcus Roberts is the only holdover — Wynton plunges into a swamp of early steamy on the title harmonies Ellington track showing off his newly acquired prowess on the plunger-mutetrumpet The major work of the album is a three-par- t suite called -- The New Or leans Function" easily the most striking and unorthodox thing Wynton has ever laid down on tape Death of Jazz" It opens with an ironic New Orleans dirge in which Wynton sounds brasher than ever before A sermon follows written by Crouch and spoken by the Rev Jeremiah Wright Jr that rails against the commercial forces that beat jazz tradition down 1 briefs for the defense of mainstream Pop notes : Not at all — certainly not in Wyntons case Wynton has thrown off his LOS ANGELES —The bell for the next round of the Branford vs Wynton Marsalis rivalry has been sounded And make no mistake — denials to the contrary it is a rivalry shaping up before our very ears on records now being released simultaneously (Wynton Marsalis will return to the Zephyr 301 S West Temple for two shows Monday evening at 8:30 and 10:30 p m following his performance over the weekend at the Telluride Jazz Festival) At first until about 1985 trumpeter Wynton easily overshadowed older brother Branford in media exposure and influence —as long as tenor saxophonist Branford was a member of Wynton's band Then when Branford left to play with Sting — some have said and both brothers deny it that Branford was asked to leave — the picture shifted While Wynton despite toying with a string section on "Hot House Flowers" was basically stuck in a 1965 Miles Davis time warp Branford grew His albums became more adventurous and his playing — once an earnest imitation of Wayne Shorter and other idols — developed a more individual tone and outlook Branford's amiable personality impish sense of humor and fondness was a stark contrast to for put-on- s 6 V Gine II S Los Angeles Daily News
