| Show ' - 'y 4F-f Johnsons display puppeteering art in weekly children's programs By Lori Buttars Tribune Staff Writer :t's easy to tell when a puppet has just the right look because the audi- ence will immediately recognize the character and cheer according to puppeteer Melody Johnson Melody and her husband Chris have been making audiences cheer with their handmade puppets for nearly eight years at the Pioneer Craft House 3271 S 5th East This summer the Johnsons and members of the Utah Guild of Puppeteers will be performing weekly children's programs at Craft House and a weeklong "Bookasaurus" presentation for the Salt Lake County Library System Since the Johnsons are both theater people (they met while attend ing drama classes at Brigham Young University) they enjoy doing the voice characterizations of different puppets "We have a good combination We each have several voices we can draw on but it is difficult for me to imitate a man's voice" she said "I can try but it just isn't quite the same" PMPFMIMMi FIREDWO 01) Jw 11 c7y) 9731t4 and TRAINS ®RANES ries" This year the library theme is centered on dinosaurs so the Johnsons will be drawing their plays from new books dealing with the prehistoric beasts "Unfortunately most of the books I've seen are about what dinosaurs ate or how big they were rather than fictional dinosaur characters" e as The Johnsons use well as scripts but they prefer to do the presentations live "You can have more control with a e show because if something and unusual happens you can ad-li- b cover for it whereas taped shows just go right on and everyone knows there was a mistake" she said Both types take a lot out of a puppeteer because it takes great concentration to stay with the tape Live shows allow for more audience par live-voic- 4t14 1100AT The Johnsons use both the traditional glove puppets with solid heads and movable arms as well as Muppet types which have movable mouths It is necessary to have both kinds of puppets she said because the movable hands allow the characters to carry things on stage while the Muppetcharacters allow the puppe-style teer to be more animated "We don't use stringed marionettes much because of the type of shows we do— traveling around they get too tangled up" she said Melody sees her productions all the way from beginning to end by writing short plays creating the pup pets and finally performing the shows before a live audience "Chris gives me a lot of ideas for the punch lines in the shows" she said "Most of the shows we do are variations of popular children's sto- live-voic- COMING TO AMERICA twatUrrnt 0 BULL DCRILOtt !
