You'd think most country western singers would confuse Menuhin with hooting mandolins or yodeling men with hens But Murphey who made a name in the '70s for "Wildfire" and "Cherottle Fiddle" has a musical frame of reference that has extended beyond Hank Williams or Merle Haggard His appearances with several symphony orchestras during the past two years have been his favorite concerts particularly with the Utah Symphony He returns to Utah this weekend to present his "Southwestern Experience" program with the Symphony His concerts last year were somewhat surprisingly extremely popular with many of the Utah Symphony musicians as well as a success with the audience Murphey paid an expensive arranger to score his songs for orchestra and the result was an attractive blend of country music with classical overtones "I don't see any point in working with the symphony if all they're going to do is provide a string pad behind music people have already heard on the radio" he said Monday from a pay phone somewhere on the outskirts of Eureka Calif He was wrapping up two weeks of outdoor !
