BY Elaine T Ashcroft Early Childhood Specialist College of Family Life Utah State University LOGAN — Handicapped students have received educational help because of federal policy — 3 42 whiCh mandates they re- ceive education and that it be giv- en in the least re- strictive environment - ''" ) 1 ' ?' 7 Most of this –environment" for school-ag- ? Ms Ashcroft e children has been provided by the public schools Beginning this fall public schools also will be responsible for educating preschool handicapped children Finding space and staff will provide a challenge to many of Utah's school districts because of already crowded conditions and low funding Plans are for the preschool handicapped children to be mainstreamed into classrooms which contain an equal number of nonhandicapped preschoolers I believe studies have shown the effects of mainstreaming are benefihowever cial and advantageous there are some concerns that should be considered and our thoughts should be expressed to school offi There are left-hande- d e g In America today there are 500000 self-helgroups 15 million people Those are conservative figures (Not figures by conservatives who in fact have lots of their own self-helgroups but figures that tend to be on the low side And speaking of the low side there are dozens of groups that cater g to that) Now don't get upset — there are groups for that too — we aren't tryis hooey ing to tell you that self-helor that advocacy is icky Far from it We know for example that Alcoholics Anonymous has been around since 1935 and currently serves about 1 million recovering alcoholics Its work has been in a word phenomenal Its program has been patterned by hundreds of grOups nationwide Its success — and impact — is not disputed But it seems that this self-helthing may have gotten out of hand tlf it the left hand there are three groups who want to help you with p p p has not been decided whether early childhood education or special education teachers will be hired 2 How will the handicapped children be located? In most districts busing will be provided and some school officials believe this will cause parents to call and tell educators they have children eligible for the program 3 How will the nonhandicapped children be located? After Head Start began in the 1960s middle and upper-clas- s parents felt that what was good for poor children was also good for their childreL and the demand for preschool experiences And the coup de grace according to Riessman: Self-helgroups are also cheap Cheaper than therapy Cheaper than continuing your habit Cheaper than finding new friends someplace else And that's no small point Seems that as churches and neighborhoods lose their pull self-helgroups are becoming — gasp do we see a trend here? — the thing around which we huddle Remember when we told our p p ministers everything? Remember when we used to or block-partor form bowling coffee-klatc- y like-mind- like-vice- drugs Their stories go something like this When Carol Orsborn formed Superwomen's Anonymous in 1985 her purpose was to provide a self-helgroup for overachieving women who suffer from having to be everything to everybody Her motto Enough is Enough underscored the groups purpose: It fponsored no s and meetings staged no elected no officers A group you could belong to without obligation Everybody — especially Superwomen — laughed Three 'ears later Orsborn has coped with the terrible burden of being a Superwoman reordered ber life taken her children out of ballet baseball piano and checkers classes and — how '80s of her has written a book about it Dangerously overachieving? You bet Now Orshorn is selling her concept and a plan for pulling together an overachievers support group Carol Carol Carol where did you go wrong? To that she gives an ephone shrug Its a joke she doesn't get And the M&M restorers say they started out jiving the Mars Co and now are being given credit for saving the red M&M (how can you malign a caLidy that refuses to melt in your hand?) ''l thought I'd have a few laughs but it escalated and got serious It also got expensive — I spent $500 of fund-raiser- open-minde- (Drugs Anonymous Cocaine Anonymous Narcotics Anonymous) neu greatly increased Since the '70s there have been some organizations arguing for placing preschools under the auspices of public schools Is this the beginning? 4 If children begin attending public schools at 3 or 4 are we going to see a continuation of the 'dribble-down- of curriculum so that specific academic subjects are taught at younger and younger ages? All new programs have some benefits and some concerns Parents especially those with preschool-ag- e children should become acquainted with what is happening in the local school district and make their opinions heard my own money" says Paul Ilethmon now an earnest Knoxville Tenn -I'd do it again photographer was It really worth it" though Even the Humor Correspondence -Yes we Club guy sounds boring 85 a are group of about comedy writers who correspond — though I guess you could also use the phone — about the latest jokes is this stuff normal? Well 10 years ago there were just a bunch — say a couple dozen — groups Today there are 50 — count 'ern 50 — clearinghouses just to keep track of the groups to refer people to them and to answer questions from journalists about them - But it doesn't stop there in our efforts to help ourselves advocate whatever and abolish whatnot we have gone far afield 7 far? Get this There are five nationwide groups that daily work to combat the dreaded scourge of Their combined membership tops out at 7886— at last count OK so it's easy to see why we battle our own demons — like gambling h leagues? That's all ancient history now because were all so danged busy So instead we join groups of individuals (or In the process we've lost our sense of humor Take Superwomen's Anonymous or the Society for the Restoration and Preservation of Red M &Ms Both started out fun but somewhere along the way they gathered steam a purpose and a sergeant-atarm- s So why now? that) (Gamblers Anonymous) Who will teach these classes? It rosis (Neurosis Anonymous) and overspending (Debtors Anonymous) And it's equally easy to see why we'd want to remain anonymous Who wants other people for example to know that you're sarcastic? (See Sarcastics Anonymous based in — where else? — California) Or messy (Messies Anonymous of Miami) Or a second banana (Anonymous Society of Second Bananas — made up of deputy secretaries of federal cabinet level departments — of Washington DC) But what is it about us that makes us want to actually join forces with others like us? Like other boring people (The Boring Institute) other people who drink zombies (American Zombie Association) other people who can't get into MENSA (DENSA) other people who love McDonnell Douglas F-- 4 Phantom II jet fighters (Phantom Phanatics Sod-eV- ) or other people who like to interrupt readings of scholarly papers (The Porlock Society) And why oh why do we get together to bring back nuclear war uppity women and linglebert II umperdinck? are seven i(There organizations that live to love Engle-hef- t Our favorite: Humper Dears) So why do we do it?
