Show Resorts Mulling Use of Ski Bugs Continued front County Calendar 1I-- J About 60,000 skiers go to Snowbird each month during the winter and only 25 thefts are reported eac h month. The Killington resort was averaging 10 thefts daily. Mr. Orlob said Aha town Marshal Eric Eliason is studying the possibility the applying for of federal grant to start the system at Alta and Snowbird. The biggest problem we have is the Plaza Deck area near the ticket window. Its close to some restaurants and people habftually leave their skis sitting around unlocked Sometimes there are 200 pairs of skis sitting around, Mr. Orlob said. Snowbird is initiating a less expensive anti-stheft plant, Mr. Orlob said. Beginning this weekend, the Plaza Deck will have a ski corral where persons can leave their equipment in a guarded area for 25 cents an hour. Although there are locking racks at the deck, many skiers do not use them because the locks sometimes jam and the cost for using the racks is 50 cents. The racks will remain at the deck for overnight storage. ' The recovery rate for stolen 6kis at Snowbird is about 10 percent, Mr. Orlob said. Most stolen skis are recovered when the owners of the equipment see someone using their skis. In one instance one of our employees more or less staked out the Plaza Deck area and caught a couple of kids who had stolen his skis, said Mr. Orlob. If you have a popular ski and binding, the only way to identify your equipment is if you engrave your name on it or record the serial number," he said. ki We know there are nation-wid- e rings that go into areas to steal several pairs of skis and then transport them to other states, said Mr. Orlob. It's very easy to steal skis. Theres nothing to picking up $.100 of equipment and walking off.
