This latest figure represents a $3 increase over the amount recorded last year (which translates to an increase of about $150 per year! and is the highest figure recorded since the Gallup Poll began charting food expendi- tures I)r. Recent Past Also conforming to the pattern of the recent past, residents of the largest cities see their food budget consume more of their total income than do persons living in smaller towns and rural areas. Inhabitants of the largest cities (one million or more people) report a median expenditure of $67 per week while those living in the smallest towns and in the country spend $51. The rise in reported food expenditures parallels government reports of increased food costs during 1978. The Consumer Price Index showed that during 1978 the price of food purchased in grocery stores rose 12.5 percent the largest annual increase since 1974. Here is the question asked.
