Show The Salt Lake Tribune. Thurxday, April j: What wonderful refrigerators that its own ice cubes and drops them into a plastic tray. I happen to he fortunate enough to have one and always had the unfortunate experience of having all that ice fall into that "plastic tray. It sticks to the plastic tray and there no doubt about it Last week I decided to try something else so the dang ice wouldnt stick. I lined the bottom of the plastic with a piece off of my roll of foil. Dad gum if it doesnt work? Isnt that something really fruitful? The ice does not stick to the plastic tray in which it drops, and neither do it. (That means to we have to hot-whold the tray under the hot water faucet until all that melted goop plops out ) Now all I do is pick up the piece of foil, take it with all that melted ice, fob and glaciers on it, to the sink and dump... ain't Youll be surprised what a taste change this makes My family loves em AH Hooray! Book says so I By Janet Murray Chicago Tribune d That wonder of yours, whose feeding dish says Doggie on it . . . have you ever wondered about his IQ Sometimes when hes in the mood he shows off a trick or does something cute that surprises you ; other times he seems struck with the dumbs. Commands to heel, stay, and sit, cut that out, pass right between his ears. Meet Kathy Coon, a practicing school psychologist, whose own mixed breed flunked obedience school. Kathy got tired of hearing how intellectually superior other peoples pooches were, so she set out to figure an ea iy no labor required way to test a dogs native, untrained intelligence. Ten Problems After three . years she had zeroed in on 10 problems, each to be solved by the dog in no longer than 15 seconds, with scores ranging from brilliant to very dumb. The average score is 5.75 out of 10. four-foote- . ZOMI The tests are to be found in an Avon paperback, The Dog Intelligence Test. Now for $2 95 you can find out how Fido rates in the brains department. Kathy's own dog, by the way, did not test out as dumb, but as having average dog intelligence. Your family dog may be smarter than you think Kathy has found that owners were poor predictors of their dogs intelligence. Shes learned a few other things through the testing years, some of which may not be too popular. String Suggestion For example, shes found that dogs who attended obedience school did no better than those who didnt. But, she says, there is a strong suggestion that the number of tricks a dog knows may predict how well hell do on the dog intelligence problems. That seems to imply that the dog who sits up and begs for his biscuits at least knows whose hand opens the dog food. Kathy also seems to think that male dogs are slightly smarter than females, and that mixed breeds are just as smart as purebreds. Some breeds do slightly better than others, she says. Example: better than temers and toy dogs. Generalizations these may seem, particularly if female purebred shows high your obedience-traine- d or as in the case of one female clown mental mettle we know whose powers of reasoning suggest shes smarter than her owners Buy the Book The best way for you to find out may be to buy the book. The tests require only the simplest of objects. For Instance, a couple are v ariations of the old shell game, or in this case the doggie treats game. The problems, Kathy say's, were chosen to measure canine skill that researchers have established as characteristics of intelligence in dogs memory, attention span, ability to adapt to new situations, skill at problem solving, and alertness. The best part, according to this author-do- g lover, is that owners and their dogs have some togetherness, but with realistic expectations on the human part of the partnership. A few tests for the owners are in the book, too.
