Show Foof fiiericvs Onion quiche, for a gourmet treat by Bonnie Bake Tribune Food Editor PROVO FIVE DAYS a week Dr Paul H Yearout has sums, axioms, postulates, octogons and ellipses running through his head Life is filled with one equation after another But ah, the weekends Dr Yearout can shelve his profession as mathematics professor, Brigham Young University, roll up his sleeves and head for the kitchen to unwind What gustatory pleasures he can create' On weekends when theres time enough and I dont feel too rushed I like to give the lady of the house a hieak, Dr Yearout explained 1 take over in the kitchen The lady of the house he is referring to is his wife, Chphane THE YEAROUTS met in their hometown, Portland, Ore , while they were both attending school After they decided marriage was for them, Chphane joined the working force while her husband completed his education I received my degree in mathematics from Reed College in Portland before I went on to do graduate work at the University of Washington, Seattle, Wash., then to the University of Chicago, Chicago, 111 , where I received my doctorate Galesburg, 111 , then beckoned to the Yearouts where Dr Yearout taught at Knox College for a three-yea- r period before becoming a faculty member at BYU He has been at the Provo school for 15 years Kitchen capers became attractive to Dr Yearout at a very early age When I was about 10, 1 began admiring my grandmothers capabilities in the kitchen She was one of the worlds great cooks and really inspired me to start having the same kind of fun in the kitchen His first lesson toward culinary excellence came from at his grandmothers side We made making cakes the cakes from scratch, of course And did it all by hand SHE TAUGHT me each step from how to cream the butter and sugar with the back of a wooden spoon to how to blend in the other ingredients We went through the whole procedure until the cake was taken from the oven golden brown and so filled with marvelous aroma Dr Yearout graduated from baking cakes to enrolling in one of the first cooking classes for boys offered at his high school Tins was a most rewarding experience for those of us who were students and it seemed to please the instructor, too, to have boys interested in the kitchen V cording to Dr Yearout during the first 10 years of their married life, he did most of the cooking Chphane and sometimes two was working one jobs and leallv didn t have time to cook Besides etijoyeel planning and piepanng meals foi us during those school often did the launch y, too Sh did the vcais 'Did c le tump " 1 1 1 He idded that he n cenes the simo ft elm' it P is a vei y lultillu1 g itnlac tion when he cooks todav task tel me w he n I c an w ati h my wite md om two sons David II and Vtuk 11 cat and enjov the mi als c 1 tie s 1 DR 'll MOLT explained bow ho lovtxlotiv in w - Dr. Paul H.
