Show REPRESENTATIVE SEELY IS ATTENTIVE WORKER While in Salt Lake last week the writer made a call on the legislature to get a glimpse of the wonderful process of making laws. It proved to be a very interesting session that we hap- pened in upon. Two bills were passed ; that afternoon which elicited lively dis-I dis-I cussions, and we were surprised at the ; trivia! and ignorant objections made to ' bills un der consideration by some of the members. You would think that they must spend their spare time at the picture shows instead of posting up on whether or not the bill to be considered should become a law. On the other hand there are those who have the pro-: pro-: visions of the bili and the effects of its passage well in mind, they are the ones who answer the inquiries and objections and re the real power of the body. To this latter class belongs Represon-' Represon-' tative Wm. J. Sely of Emery county. He gives his attention the evening be fore to the bills to be considered the next day and is not obliged to take the time of the whole body to get information. informa-tion. He watches the progress during the session and knows all changes and alterations when it comes to a vote. At the session we attended a bill by Harshberger of San Juan was passed appropriating $12,000 for the use of the state land board in putting down experimental exper-imental wells in sections suitable for dry farming. If this passes the senate and becomes the law it gives the land board considerable more scope in which to work. Under the present law they only have the authority to drill wells for culinery water while the new bill authorizes irrigation tests. The next day after the passage of this bill Representative Seely, State Auditor Jewkes, Statistician Haines and J. S. Moffitt appeared before the land board and made application for a couple of these wells in Emery county. The land at the foot of Cedar mountain and the Sinbad country were the places described to them. Considerable encouragement en-couragement was received and the written application together with an application for the survey of the lands will be on file for the consideration of the board at its next meeting. Mr. Seely is working on a road appropriation ap-propriation bill and some others and looking after a transitory stock bill calculated cal-culated to give Emery county a share of the taxes of the stock pastured here , and from which we now get no benefit. |
