The 2001 Cyprus High school football team was honored with a banquet on Nov. 26 at Golden Corral Restaurant in West Valley city. Awarded were 45 varsity letters and other special' recognition for players and program supporters. All 19 Cyprus seniors lettered, including Josh Crosby, Sean Matagi, Jason Meyers, Tory Tima, Steve Contratto, Nothan Cash, Joey Perea, Steve Butler, Jeff Scott, Chris Hemsley, Jason Murdock, Noel Manzanares, Eldon Gomez, Scott Vamanrav, Bobby Linschten, Darrin Westover, Eric Twitchell, Shaon Rillion and Ian James. All 23 Pirate juniors lettered, including Kyle Huntsman, David Astill, Tyson Pearce, Mike Burtis, Justin Murdock, David Shaw, Ammaron Wolfgramm, Josh Hardman, All-Regi- all-regi- BY S. Cyprus faces a pair of nonconference opponents in early December, including Granger High in West Valley City on Dec. 7 and Judge Memorial Catholic High at home in Magna on Dec. 14. Rounding out the Cyprus nonconference slate will be the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada on Dec. 20 Dec, 22. This premier tour- ney features top high school teams from across North America. The Pirates swept through all opposition to a spectacular championship during last year's Las Vegas holiday tourney. Cyprus opens the 2002 Region 5 conference regular season schedule against Highland in Salt Lake City on Jan. 4. The 2002 Utah state high school boys basketball tourney will be held in late Feb. and early Staff Writer Cyprus Pirates varsity 2 boys open the basketball season against nonconference opponent Mountain View High in Orem this Friday. Game time for the November 30 opener is 7 p.m. The Cyprus High School varsity boys basketball team is comprised of 5 seniors, 5 juniors and 5 sophomores. A dozen of the hoops squad stand over 66 feet tall. Six of the 12 tower 4 or taller. Members of the 2001 Cyprus Pirates varsity boys basketball team include seniors Dan Lefevre, Chase Bawden, Tory Tima, Greg Allen and Seth Dickison. Juniors are Kyle Huntsman, Chase Stringfellow, Ammaron Wolfgramm, Joe Wice and Rawley Loutensock. Sophomores are Marc Allen, Tyler Jones, Robby Garside, Forrest Ledbetter and Tyson Astin. The previous record was set at 17 last year by Betts. Goalie Nick Vorberg set a new team record for saves in a season with 392. Last year Vorberg had 349 saves. The league record is 456. Vorberg also leads the World Indoor Soccer League in save percentages and shots faced. Notable Cyprus victories were scored against gridiron rivals Hunter and Kearns, and regional schools Woods Cross, East High and West High of Salt Lake City. A trio of heartbreaker losses made the difference in having an 8 - 2 record. Cyprus lost 28 - 20 to Granger, 2 - 0 to Murray and 21 - 20 to Bountiful. the Freezz are away games at Sacramento and St. Louis. The team will be fighting an uphill batter as they have won only two games on the road and have losing records against both teams so far this sea- With only two games left in the regular season, the Utah Freezz indoor soccer team are fighting for the final spot in the playoffs. The Freezz, 3 currently sit in fifth place, game behind the St. Louis Steamers for fourth place and four games behind first place Dallas. The top four teams will go to the playoffs.
