Following medic training he joined the 82nd paratroopers unit and became a combat medic where he was also made a sergent. He was named "Best Solider" in the U.S. after representing his Army the annual at company fitness competition. Army "Because what he is doing is part of the Elite Special Forces he is not able to tell us what he is doing or where he is at," Petty said. "We're real proud of him for what he is doing." The soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history and traditions. During infantry training, he developed basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced using various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. Allison B. Beazer has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year. The enlistment gives the new soldier the option to learn a new skill, travel and become eligible to receive as much as $50,000 toward a college education. After customs; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Oldham (4180 V). A special World AIDS Day commemoration is being held at Salt Lake Community College on Dec. 1. That night, special candlelight vigils to remember those who have died of AIDS are being held at the college. Utah's World AIDS Day activities will begin at 1 p.m. at the SLCC Lifetime Activities Center located at 4600 S. Redwood Rd. According the the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are currently 1,658 cases of HIV AIDS in Utah. Events and activities include musical performances by Midnight Lenny, The Taylor Trio, Emily Taylor and Matt Calder, educational games, free HIV testing, food and refreshments. The AIDS quilt will be on display throughout the build ing and community booths will be located within the facility. At 3 p.m. winners of a youth poster contest will be announced and the winning entries will be posted at the center. The candlelight vigil will begin at 5 p.m. with a interfaith service featuring performances and apprearances by the Salt Lake Men's Choir, the Calvary Baptist Church Adult Choir and a reading of the names of many Utahns that have lost their lives to AIDS. Immediately following the service, attendants can proceed outside for the candlelight vigil. SLCC was chosen as the main site for Utah's World AIDS Day activities because of its strong youth relationship and affiliations. One of four new HIV infec tions occur in persons under the age of 22. The Theme of the 2001 World AIDS Day is '1 care do you? Youth and AIDS in the 21st Century." It was selected to highlight this problem and encourage all young people to become more aware of the risks of AIDS and HIV. The worldwide day of remembrance for AIDS victims originated in 1988 after an international summit of health ministers called for a new spirit of social tolerance and a greater exchange of information on HIV AIDS. As of 2000, 36.1 million men, women and childen worldwide are estimated to be living with AIDS and 21.8 million have died from AIDS. In the U.S. alone, 40,000 persons are newly affected each year.
