DEAN LEDBETTER STAFF WRITER The 2000 Utah Amatuer Athletic Union age 13 Basketball State Tournament begins next week on March 20 near Salt Lake City. Featuring 16 premeir Utah teams, the state AAU tourney games will be played at two different sites, Alta and West Jordan. Representing the Hunter and Magna areas of the western Salt Lake Valley in the state AAU tournament will be the Hunter-Magn- a Rangers. The Rangers scrimmaged an March 10 in preperation for the upcomming statewide competition. The boys looked really good in the scrimage, commented Jon Allen, Rangers head coach. We will scrimmage again this Friday Bracket and are looking forward to the state AAU tournament. The Rangers AAU basketball line-u- p of team features an Ct V 4.if all-st- ar age 13 youth, including guards Marc Allen, Jayson Buhler, Kip Nowers, and Tyler Jones, centers Forrest Ledbetter and Otis Nelson, and forwards Clark Johnson and Jeff Wadsworth. Jon Allen and Kim Nowers coach the rangers. If the Hunter-Magn- a Rangers win the Utah State AAU Championship or finish second, the team will earn a berth in the 2000 US National AAU basketball tournament, July 30 through August 5 in Orlando, Florida near Walt Disney World. She shot a solid 75 percent from tlje free throw line while grabbing 5 rebounds, and 3 steals per game. Sie also averaged 1 blocked shot pfcr game as well as 4 assists. Shes a team leader as far as overall play is concerned, said Ostberg. Shes an excellent shooter who tends to give the ball up iore than she shoots it She is also great ball handler and has the ability to pick the ball off from opposing players. Ostberg also pointed out that Howe is a great passer which will help fill the void left by the departure of Montoya. Paola Marsenaro played some outstanding Junior Varsity and Varsity games for Kearns and the coach will look to her to help lead the team. She came back in great shape and we look forward to seeing her get better and better next year. Rachel Westmoreland is a transfer from Copper Hills High School and according to the coach she can play both power forward and guard. Ostberg points out her overall speed as a great asset to the Cougars. Mandy Young, Erica Brown and Amber Marsh are three younger players Ostberg feels will really help the club in the future. All down four against Alta earlier in the state tournament and the coach will look to her next year to help defend the title. Guard Danette Howe will be back and i 25 three of those girls have great speed, size and ability to help our team out next year, said Ostberg. All three players are very physical te 25-- 8 ' and we look forward to their success. Emily Hilliam will play shoot-in- g guard and power forward for Kearns next year and according to the coach will be couijted on heavily. Emily is probably the fastest player on our team. She is also a great defender, said Ostberg. Julia Ostler will play another important role for Kearns next year. She suffered from a hip injury this year and the coach looks forward to her full recovery. Ostler and Hilliam are not only basketball champions but track and field champions on the Keams High relay team. Not only does the coaching staff and team have the state title to cel- ebrate but three members of the coaching staff are expecting babies in the near future. The Ostbergs are expecting in April, coach Zach Allison and his wife are expecting in July and coach Paige Mulford is expecting in June. The Freezz will hit the turf at The E center of West Valley City beginning on July 29. The Freezz will play a total of 24 WISL games this season, an increase of two from last season. The Freezz played 12 home games and 10 road games last year. This season will have a balanced schedule of 12 games each at home and on the road. The schedule will also feature two exhibition games at home in addition to the regular season schedule.
