MERRILL, Horticulturist, B. Y. U. As one gees about Provo and no-- P rofessional ! Men tices the landscape features of the homes of this city, this fact becomes plainly evident: Provo needs more Shrubs or ornamental bushes about her homes. In the past there has been too much planting of trees and too little planting shrubs for a proper planting balance and the most pleas- ing landscape effects. Then there are many homes with no shrubs at all on the premises, and that deficiency is very noticeable. Interest is being rapidly awakened in this subject and there are many people who are now inquiring as to the best shrubs to plant and how or where to plant them. For such people and any others who desire the information this article is written. There are certain standardized rules or practices that should be observed if the best results or most artistic effects are to be obtained with shrubs. In the first place they should rarely be planted singly but In groups of three or more depending on. the space. In other words, the effect is produced not by single, Shrubs' specimens, but in mass. should not be planted in rows, nor along the path leading to the house, as was so commonly done in the past, but in artistic nature-lik- e groups about the corners of the house, the corners of the premises, or grouped in masses along the borders of the lot, or as a screen for unsightly objects. As a general thing it is well to group shrubs of related varieties together and not have too many different kinds in the same group unless they blend or harmonize. Professional gardeners frequently get very pleasing effects by mixing species, but unless one knows the plants and their flowers and characteristics well, it is safer to plant only few kinds or only one kind in any one group. The reason for this precaution is that the color shades of a particular variety may not harmonize with those of a different species. Likewise the habit of growth, the stems, leaves, size, etc., of the plants may not blend to the best advantage. In setting out the plants they should be put about 4 to 6 feet apart, depending upon their size. The fine or small stemmed varieties that are of refined or dainty appearance, or which are low or dwarfed should be placed in front and the coarser or taller sorts placed behind or to the 1 thats what your clothes Good appearance ; dignity ; reserve must express. Five years later came the debut as Cordelia in Lear and the rest is a chronicle of more than 200 famous roles, nearly all of them having to do with great love swayed by hate or jealousy. In later years the early triumphs of her talent over dramatic art were obscured by her physical victories over age. At 75, from a seat midway out in front, she might have passed for a woman of 35. It seemed that her mind, perennially youthful, willed her body to resist the scars of time. She literally clung to a girlish appearance. In 1915 Sarah Bernhardt was forced to submit to amputation of the leg midway in the thigh. She continued to play roles where she either remained upon a divan or stood gasping a chai. She came to America ten times, the last in 1916, when she As an artist, Bernhardt's great forte was her power of transmitting her own emotional dynamics to her audience. Her own memoirs sedulously avoid mention of amorous Incidents. Bernhardt herself horsewhipped a jealous rival who caused a satiric sketch of them to be published.
