Show FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 1923 Mix Work and Play Fairbanks Advice All work and no play makes Jack " a dull boy. , And, all play and no work' Jiakes a man a bum. I happy medium is the thing. This is universallyalways conceded Do"glas Fairbanks, who so brillianuy eclipses all his past screen triumphs in his latest cinema Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood,' a United Artists release, coming next week to the Columbia theater, says: "Mix work with play. This is his succinct" way of expressing the only panacea for the malady of any extreme. Supplemen tary to this he says: of unrelieved work is like amonotny blotter, for it will absorb all your initiative and vitality. If you want to dodge an early decline and prolong your years of usefulness, stop working at regular intervals for exercise and diversion. This is the only way I ever discovered to keep physically fit and happy. Fairbanks emphasizes the fact that no human being can do good work after having worked to the point of producing a withering fatigue, and, he adds, pointedly, that it makes lit tie difference how important any task may be, its complete accomplish' ment can almost invariably wait until one is best able, physically, to dig in and execute It successfuly. If you have no wholesome outdoor sports, you're not likely to last long as a valuable Indoor toiler, and I'm for boosting the idea of making athletics as general as possible, he continues. It's all a question of getting work and play mixed in proper proportions. Be wise in this mixing process and youll get rid of half of lifes troubles." mas-terpiec- Word Comes From lumber manofac-tunncenters that the demands for lumber this year will exceed that of any previous year in our countrys history. GUARANTEED WORK Alfred Megerlin, engaged as of the Minneapolis Symphony orchestra, which Is to appear here on Monday, May 7, at the Stake Tabernacle, despite his short residence in the United States, has already gained a fine reputation as an artist. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, he began his studies at the age of seven, later entering the Brussels Conservatoire where in 1900 he was awarded the first prize. After this he became a pupil of Ysaye and is a warm, personal friend of the Belgian master of the violin. During these years of study he became concertmaster of the Flemish orchestra at Antwerp where he played under the direction of the orchestra. Starting In 1904 he toured the continent for ten years. The outbreak of the war found him in Switzerland, where he was spending his vacation. With no possibility of returning to his home, which was later destroyed during the bombardment of Antwerp, he came to America. For five years concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic orchestra, he has gained a wide following in New York. His appearance in the northwest during the tour of the New York orchestra last year was the occasion of much favorable press comment in connection with his rendition of important solo pasages in the orchestral works performed. Enthusiasm over the selection of so accomplished a musician as concertmaster is rife in musical circles and particularly in Utah, .where his coming is awaited with keen interest by music lovers. Weak Kidneys. FURNITURE AND PIANO MOVING Kow ACCOMPLISHED ARTIST orful history serves as an Important ornament and prop in Pola Negris first American-mad- e Paramount picture, Bella Donna, which will be on view at the Columbia theater Saturday. The rosary is the property of Dudley Stuart Corlett, an Egyptologist who served as technical director during the filming of this Paramount picture. Captain Corlett spent ten years in Egypt, and the rosary was secured by him while n Somaliland. Representing native workmanship at its best, the rosary was the personal property of a retainer of the infamous Mad Mullah of the Abyssinian border. For his participation in one of the Mad Mullahs raids on residents of Somaliland, the owner was sentenced to death. On the eve of his execution he presented the rosary to its present owner. Most Christian people regard the rosary as a distinctly Christian institution, hut its origin dates back to the prayer beads of the early Hindu and Buddhist philosophies. The Mohammedan rosary consists home-recommend- years of knowing SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA attributes ing one of the ninety-nin- e of God. The hundredth attribute of God is known only to the Imman of Constantinople, official head of the church, and is represented in the rosary by a bead of different color and size. The rosary worn by Pola Negri in Bella Donna consists of the usual number of beads cut by a dagger from ebony, leaving them faceted like a diamond. The hundredth bead is a huge amber, one of beautiful color and finish. In Ouida Bergeres adaptation of Robert Hichens story, the rosary plays an important part. George Fitzmaurice directed this picture, and the cast includes Conway Tearle, Conrad Nagel, Lois Wilson, Claude King and Macey Harlam. (I Phyllis Haver, who supports Frank Mayo in The Bolted Door, the Universal production ffomlng to the Princess theater tonight and Saturday, has set a high standard for emotional work in a number of feature screen plays. Selecting the beauty for the role indicates Universals policy to give stars the best support possible. Other members of the cast were' selected with corresponding care and IJIgel Barry, Charles A. Stevenson, Kathleen Kirkham and others have Important roles. The story is of a wife who refuses to love, honor or obey her husband of an hour. The situation where the husband, loving his bride, is told by her that there is another man in her life who she believes means more to her than he, is one of dramatic portents. The story was written by George Gibbs, author of many novels dealproblems, and ing with marriage screen the to by George adapted I Randolph Chester. William Worthington was chosen to direct.
