Jordan, Bingham By MIKE GYGI Tunes Correspondent CITY-T- he VALLEY WEST Granger Lancers moved their mark upward last week with victories over W'est Jordan, 80-5and Bingham, pre-seas- 67-5- Kelly Overby and Stan Winrow were standouts for the Lancers, averaging more than 20 points in both games. Some wrestling teams do well in dual meets because the varsity is so strong, but show poor presentation in the tournaments because of a weak junior varsity team. Granger got excellent representation from both of its teams. In the consolation bracket, the Lancers had five wrestlers who placed. Pat Bradshaw, 98, finished thiid; Richard I itilewood, 105, took third; Dave Winter, 132, was fourth; Scott Bocck, 167, also finished fourth and Mark Boelter, heavyweight, took third. The Pirates also had a good week on the mats. They defeated Cottonwood, 44-2then went on to take a fourth at the Granite tournament last weekend. Cyprus placed three grapplers in the winners' circle: Dave Lucero, 105; Dave Vialpando, 112; and Mark English, 119, all took championships. Wayne King, 126, finished third; PI EASE IlKN 1(1 PACE 8 Cyprus game, and the Pirates got very few fast breaks. The Pirates had only 10 assists, a good deal less than their average of per game. 20-pl- The Pirates couldnt get inside as often as they have in the past, due to Jordan's height advantage. The Pirates, who met Pleasant Grove Dec. 22, wind up their hosting Ben Lomond Dec. 30. Coach Paul Dilley said if he could with two vicwind up his tories, the team would be in very good shape to meet Cottonwood for the league opener. The Pirates played Cottonwood earlier this season in the Granite School District tournament semifinals and lost by seven points. Dilley said, I think we should do real well against Pleasant Grove this time, mainly due to the fact that the one kid who was a real thorn in our side has graduated. We havent played that bad in any of our games this season so far, but we have played some really excellent teams such as Highland and Jordan. With happy thoughts in mind and with some special needs remembered, I wish the following heartfelt gifts: 1. To Bill Hunter, the Cyprus football coach: I wish a trip to the state finals. 2. To Richard Lohmeyer, that great umpire: I wish a new pair of glasses. 3. To Robbie Bezzant, the Pirate linebacker: I wish a football scholarship. 4. To Bruce Takeno, the Kearns football coach: 1 wish some linebackers as tough as he used to be. 5. To Howard Condie and Bill Haslam, those noted officials: I wish a new set of basketball rule books. In the Bingham game Dec. 18, the victory came at the foul line. The Miners got into foul trouble early and that plagued them throughout the game. The Lancers went to the foul line 35 times and came away with 23 points, for a shooting percentage of 65. The Lancers also shot well from the field, hitting 49 percent. Iverson said, The Bingham game was pretty rough and very physical. 1 was just glad to get out of it. The Lancers travel to Alta Dec. 30. The Hawks combine power with height. This should be a closer game for the Lancers. The key to Grangers success in this game will no doubt come from the effectiveness of Grangers bench.
