They won away from home, shutting out the West Jordan Jaguars 25-- The victory evens the Cougars The win couldn't have come at a better time. After losing to Hillcrest the week before, the Cougars needed to end their season on a high note. The Cougars played with a different strategy from that of their previous performances. They were in a run offense all game, and it worked great. The Cougars moved the ball rather easily down the field against the Jaguars. Gary Forakis ran into the end zone twice in the first quarter. One score was from 10 yards, the other was from seven. Runningback Cody Skinner also had a field day with the run. Tailback Tim Rose, who has seen about 15 minutes of action in eight games this year, was in the game long enough to score from 10 yards out. Even though the Cougars were not so hot on extra points (one of three), they found themselves with a very comfortable 19-- 0 lead at halftime. The Cougar defense took over in the second half, led by the usual standouts Farrell Price, Keith Keyes, and Sam Coates. The defense kept the Jaguars out of their territory. There wasnt a scoring threat to be seen, except for a touchdown that West Jordan would have called back due to a region record to Coach Bruce Takeno said it was good to win this game, but it was too bad that the record is no indication of how good the Cougars really are. Takeno said that when Kearns needed the big win, they just didnt have it, or let down too early. 3-- 3. holding penalty. Sam Coates was in fine form, picking off his fifth interception of the season for Kearns, and running it back 20 yards for another Cougar score. Coates is an prospect for linebacker this year. This really is a playoff team, and its just a shame they wont be there, Takeno said. The Cougars have next year to look forward to. They have many men in key positions coming back to play. Quarterback Todd Anderson will be returning, and he will have a couple of fine running backs behind him in Skinner and Cory Snodgrass. Chuck Albertson, who filled in for John Oberman a lot this year (and did a fine job), will also be returning. Ends and defensive backs Sarvj Gill and Mark Powell are also returning to Kearns next year. Kearns will be losing some great defensive men, but if Takeno starts feeding some of his sophomores and juniors now, who knows? By MIKE GYGI Times Correspondent One of the largest sporting organizations serving the Magna and Hunter areas is the Utah Youth Soccer Association. The association caters to almost 1,000 kids who want to play soccer, and sets up and teams scheduling twice a year. In charge of this massive task for this year are Ken and Sue Kosack, who have the responsibility of seeing that all the teams are signed up, scheduled, and organized. This is not an easy job. The children come from the schools in the Magna-Huntarea, such as Academy Park, Hunter, Jackling, Monroe, Whittier, Lakeridge, Magna, Webster, Orchard, and Sandburg. The Pirate defense stymied the Granite running game. The Pirates seemed to be set up for another score with an excellent punt return by Jet f Sorenson to the farmers 0, but a dipping penalty brought the ball back to the Cyprus seven yardline. The Pirates were unable to move the ball and had to punt from deep in their own territory, giving Granite some d field position. Gorden Black sent a booming punt over the receiver. There are other groups and other folks who make the occasion a gala one. Im speaking of the fans, the band, and the cheerleaders. During the 15 years I have watched Little League football I have really been impressed with the cheerleaders. They are there snow or blow, wind or rain, fog or smog, and they are there with enthusiasm. These young girls give a game a much-neede- d feminine touch. I have always contended that every game and most situations are greatly improved by the presence of females. Football is no exception. You may remember this point being made by the sailors in the musical South Pacific, when they sang: What aint we got? We aint got dames. The song goes on to say, There is nothing you can name that is This is anything like a dame. especially true of girl cheerleaders. They add so much to an already emotional game we call football. I project that if it werent for the cheerleaders the players wouldnt run as fast, tackle as hard, or play as well. It is my opinion that the cheerleaders add a dimension to football that could not be accomplished in any other way or by any other group. Hats off to those Business Slow?
