Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 19, 2001 Dixie Speaks The recent flak over the Harry Potter books made me think about something which happened years ago when my older sons were taking their first health (sex ed) classes. I was a young parent and nervous about what they were learning. I went to school, read all the class material and talked to the teachers at length...because I was concerned about what my children were being taught Did I have a right to do that? Of course, I was their parent and the one ultimately responsible for their upbringing. First of all. I've never read Harry Potter. But I'm entirely in favor of books which stimulate creativity, and encourage young people to read. As a newspaper editor, I detest any form of censorship. Intelligent people should read a variety of literature, and be exposed to numerous new concepts and ideas. That is how we learn and define what we truly believe. Harry Potter opponents point out that the Bible cannot be read in school, while diverse literature many would consider inappropriate is allowed. . We do have some some ambiguous laws in America! But while I love the Bible and grew up in a religious home, the Bible also has many story subjects which some would deem inappropriate for young children. Adultery, incest, murder and miracles are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head. The Bible, like other written works, should be read and openly discussed with your children. But, nobody can deny the message of peace, love and. hope that the Bible offers. While I don't agree with Harry Potter opponents, ifs heartening to me to see parents who care not only what tneir kids are doing, but what they are learning. Public education is financed by taxpayers. I defend a parent's right to investigate school material, and determine whether they feel it appropriate or not. Are you aware of what your child is being taught in school? It's always humbling to me to discover what I don't know. We applaud the board's sensitive handling of this issue of parental concern.
