Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion The Southern Utah News would like to take this opportunity to honor Mayor Karen Alvey as she completes her four year term serving Kanab City. To say that Karen has been a wonderful asset to Kanab would be an understatement. Alvey has worked diligently on behalf of this community. She's a tenacious woman, who expects everyone to possess the same level of energy and commitment to projects that she has. (Believe me, I know this for a fact. I've served on committees with her - she can be a real pain in her persistence!) While many people complain that politicians waste taxpayer's money, Alvey has done just the opposite. She has never turned in a single travel reimbursement to the city, paying for most city business trips out of her own pocket. Primarily due to Karen's efforts, Dixie College has established a satellite campus in Kanab. There is a new public the old building will soon be works building east of town-an- d demolished. A new swimming pool for the community is nearer to reality due to her efforts. Alvey was responsible for beginning the process to get the Smart Site in Kanab, an endeavor which will hopefully provide many good paying jobs in the future. There are new curbs and gutters south and east of town, largely due to her good working relationship with UDOT. Relationships are a particular strong point of Karen's, she's never met a stranger. Her warm personality and generous nature lend her to making and keeping friends easily. Her friendships and connections have improved Kanab's reputation, and opened doors to opportunities throughout the state. We would like to thank Mayor Alvey for her service to Kanab. Not many of us can say that we've left a place better for our being there, but Karen Alvey can say that. Letters to the Editor What is your opinion? Hogans letter of November 14, 2001 expressing shock and disgust at the response of a newly elected council member when a current council member came up to congratulate him the day after the election. He responded, Well, how many boxes of tissue did you go through last night? I burst out laughing, That newly elected council member might be in need ofsome tissues himself before his term is over. Its like the young man who grabbed a tiger by the tail and was briefly glad that hed caught him. how GREAT things come in small packages. To each individual that came forward with money, clothing, food, dishes, and prayers, we will be forever grateful. The loss of our home and our things on October 11 seem far less important when we compare it to the loss felt in this whole country on September 1 1. I feel very lucky to have my children safe, and at home with me. (Evenifhomeisinamotel!) They are truly my precious treasures! I cant say it enough. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
