Coach, Id be offended if I were smart enough to be sure that was an insult! Were still struggling to plug gaps in the long gray line. Youd be as welcome as a dog at a flea convention if youd join us. Actually plug gaps has a sour ring to it. My dad once told me that all Id ever be good for was to build a wall out of or to use to fill up a well. Lets just say the Dixie would be plum tickled pink if youd sign up for a class or two. Even instructors.. .even if Rodney picked them. Classes are at the high school where Doug Jacobs and the Kane County School District have been exceptionally kind to us. Tuition is nominal when you consider there are no student fees and you can remain at home while gaining an education. What more can Dixie offer.. .except Rodneys termination? I dont really want to leave because I know youd be worried sick about me. The last time 01 Rodney cried was when he was seven and his dad kicked him in the ribs for poking his sister with a sharp stick. John Armstrong, DDS 435-644-41- 81 or Kanab, UT 84741 juvenile court system By Lisa Livingston Did you know that 47 of Utahs school-ag- e population is at risk when it comes to literacy? One in five Utahns is now functionally illiterate and one in five students scores below 22 percent in Stanford Achieve- ment reading. Ask a teacher what happens with a by grade four and heshe will likely report that the becomes a behavior problem. 85 of the children in our Juvenile Court System cannot read. Because of illiteracy, these children become behavior problems and are at risk for behavior patterns. One of the answers for the growing problems relating to illiteracy is early, systematic instruction in phonetics. In 1997, a Congressionally mandated independent panel found that teaching children phonemic awareness (the ability to break non-read- er non-read- er anti-soci- al apart and manipulate the soimds in words), phonics (blending the sounds represented by the letters of the alphabet) and guided oral reading, are necessary when teaching children ho w to read. Children need early stimulation soon after birth, they need to be talked to, looked at, i;ead to, and nurtured in an intellectually meaningful way. This type of early intellectual stimulation is essential to optimal Grand achievement, (Chambliss, C. 1997). years are the most prolific learning years and parents are a childs most influential teachers.
