Kids are especially enjoying this affordable, easy to ride version of an old means of conveyance. Drivers should be watchful for kids zipping around neighborhoods, on sidewalks, in parking lots and suburban on the new, cul-de-sa- cs sleek aluminum scooters. Recently, Utah has seen an alarming number of injuries involving young children and scooters. To help prevent serious injuries, the Utah Safety Council advises parents to purchase safety equipment along with the scooter and insist that riders use Parents should also make sure that kids ride in safe environments to reduce the frequency and severity of scooter-relate- d injuries among children. The Utah Safety Council offers the following safety tips to help prevent injuries: Children should always wear a properly fitted helmet, and elbow and kneepads when riding a scooter. Children ages eight and under should not use scooters without close adult supervision. it. Check the scooter often for hazards such as loose, broken or cracked pai is. Confine riding to parks with paved paths or neighborhoods with sidewalks. Use extra caution when crossing driveways. Ride scooters on smooth, paved surfaces free from traffic. Avoid riding on streets or surfaces with water, sand, gravel or dirt. car; bus, truck, bicycle, etc. Limit use of the scooter to one person at a time. Walk down steep hills. Some scooters have been recalled because of defects that could lead to injury. Check the Consumer Product Safety Commissions website (www.cpsc.gov) for a complete list of recalls. The kickoff ceremony was highlighted by Earth Day poster contest grand prize presentations. Following the awards ceremony, Kanab residents turned their. attention to the State Route 11 cleanup project, while Fredonia residents cleaned Fredonia City Park. Approximately 50 participants collected 66 bags of tiash and a trailer full of debris. Thanks to the Grand Staircase-EscalanNational Monument and the Kanab Beautification Committee for sponsoring this event, and to the Arizona Strip Interpretive Association (ASIA) for providing the poster contest prizes. Prizes for the poster contest honorable mention winners will be awarded later this month at each schools closing award ceremony.
