Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 4, 2000 Opinion 4 Dixie Speaks The family feud gets more heated every Olympics. Let me share it. The men's basketball team got the Olympic gold in Australia... what a surprise. For those who don't follow the Olympics, the United States men's basketball team is comprised of professional basketball players. This year, not even one college basketball player competed. The entire 2000 U.S. Olympic basketball team were paid athletes, who've spent the majority of their adult lives shooting a ball through a hoop for say...(and this is ballpark).. .$5,000,000-$15,000,00- 0 a year! The Olympics was intended as an amateur sporting event. It wasn't supposed to be an international competition for professionals! My concept of the Olympics is that different nations select their best amateur athletes for fair sporting competition. My sons' argument, (yes unfortunately, more than one disagrees with my incredible reasoning), is that the Olympics is a competition of the best athletes in the world. Since it naturally follows that our professional basketball players are the best, they should be our representatives. In fairness, some other countries field a few professionals on their teams...but not the whole team, and their players do not nvke mega-million- s. The boys quickly point to the old Soviet Union who as much as bred, reared on manna and financially-secure- d athletes, so that they could compete and beat the rest of us for the Olympic glory. No argument there. But in the earlier days most other countries, including the U.S., despised that kind of "win at all costs" attitude. You won't see a good Rocky-typ- e story in the United States in recent times, where a poor athlete who works really hard obtains a athlete, surprise Olympic glory. What you will see is an over-pai- d with a the Park Mercedes in to hisher Olympic driving up personal trainers, to work a few hours and collect yet another perk for being one of America's chosen. How values have eroded-w- e have become who wre despised! The old Soviet Union is gone, but what has replaced it is other countries willing to sacrifice good athletic competition and principles, in an attempt to he the best and win at all costs.
