Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 6, 2000 Sports Cowboys drop tough one to Millard, 14-- 8 Spiral Motes The Kanab Cowboys lost a another chance, as they stopped close one to the Millard Eagles Millard six inches short on fourth last Friday night, 14-- Millard and one from the Cowboy 29. o By Kyle Brunner 8. came to town ranked as one of the top two teams in our region and the Cowboys played them tough. Two big plays hurt the Cowboys, one on a touchdown run by Eagle back Phillip Tuttle just before the half to give Millard a 0 lead. Faced with a fourth and one on the Cowboy 17 yard line with :30 on the clock, Tuttle broke through the line, cut outside and sprinted to the end zone. It was really a defensive battle up until that point. On the Eagles first drive, they converted a fourth down on Kanabs 35, only to be held by the Cowboys on the 12, losing the ball on downs. In the second quarter, Millard was on the move again, converting another fourth down on the Cowboy 36. That drive was killed when Kyle Brunner intercepted a pass on the 11 yard line on another fourth down play. After the Eagles stopped Kanab and forced another punt, they started drive before halftheir time on their own 45. The second half started a little better for the Cowboys when safety Mace Glazier intercepted a tipped Eagle pass on Millards 36. An unsportsmanship penalty put the ball on the 21. After passes from QB Sam Noel to Andy McFadden and Glazier, the Cowboys were sitting on the four yard line. With 9:19 left in the third, Kanab tied the score when Noel zipped a pass to Brunner, who made a nice diving catch in the end zone. The Cowboys surprised the Eagles when they faked the extra point kick and Josh Blasdell scampered around the left end to make it 6 Kanab. After the Cowboy defense held Millard, they started their next drive from their own 39. Two plays later, Millard intercepted on the Cowboy 43. Facing a third and 13, the Eagles made another one of their big plays, a 31 yard pass, all the way down to the Kanab 15. A few plays later, Tuttle scored again, this time on a one yard plunge with 4:13 left in the third. Their two point conversion was good and Millard led 14-Kanab returned the kickoff to their own 28. A 15 yard pass from Noel to Blasdell put them on the 43. Three plays later, they were forced to punt again, as the offense couldnt get on track. A 65 yard punt by Blasdell pinned the Eagles back on their own two yard line. Millard converted two first downs before they were forced to punt the ball back to the Cowboys. With 5:31 left in the game, Kanab had 6-- go-ahe- ad 8-- 8. However, less than a minute later, Millard intercepted again, this time on their own 34. A big sack by Zach White and a four yard loss on an option run forced Millard to punt with 2:32 left on the clock. Kanab got the ball on their own 11 for one last try. Three plays later, facing a fourth and three, the Cowboys failed to convert and gave the ball back to Millard on the 19 with 1:25 left in the game and it was over. Defensively, the Cowboys were much improved over the first game, with linebackers Robert Hansen, Zach White and Andy McFadden having big games.
