Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY JULY 7, 1999 By Trooper Shane Nordfclt For the two weeks of June 5, 1999 through June 18. 1999 the Utah Highway Patrol stopped 195 vehicles, issuing 150 citations and 63 warnings. Troopers also investigated 11 accidents, arrested two drunk drivers, and assisted 11 stranded motorists. Michael Parryn of British Columbia, Canada made the mistake of stopping at the Port of Entry to ask for directions on the afternoon of June 6th. Actually, the mistake was that he had a few too many before he stopped to ask for directions. The observant folks at the Port detected the alcohol and called Trooper Whitaker who took Mr. Parryn to jail for DUI. On June 7th, Trooper Cluff cited and released Shannon D. Vielgath for possession of mari- juana and drug paraphernalia. Trooper McCleve investigated an injury accident on June 9th at milepost 1 on Highway 89. By the time Trooper McCleve arrived at the scene the National Park Service had arrested the driver, a Kelsey E. Parrish for DUI. So all Trooper McCleve got to do was investigate the accident. Trooper Bailey investigated an injury accident on June 10th at milepost 116 on Highway 89. The accident happened when Michael Spoumas from Boulevard, California turned in front of William Bayard of Houston, Texas. Three occupants in the vehicles sustained minor injuries. Of course youve all heard about the excitement generated by Wendy Louder on June 1 1th. chase It involved a in both Utah and Arizona, and several police agencies were involved. Troopers McCleve and Whitaker were involved from the Utah Highway Patrol. In the end it was successful because nobody got hurt, and thats a real credit to those officers who were involved. Trooper McCleve cited Robert L. Stephen, formerly of Kanab and currently from Cedar City, for possession of marijuana and littering. This occurred on June 12th in connection with a roadblock east of Kanab. Trooper Bailey came down out of the cooler climates ofGarfield County to investigate an injury accident in Kane County on June 12th. The accident occurred at milepost 101 when a southbound vehicle went off the road and rolled three times. Minor injuries were reported. On June 13th Trooper high-spee- d Whitaker arrested Spencer Clegg of Orem, Utah for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and pos- session of alcohol by a minor. Trooper Whitaker was able to put his accident investigation skills to work by investigating two accidents on the 15th and one on the 16th. The first one happened at milepost 52 when Cody Freeman of New Harmony fell asleep at the wheel and e drifted left cf center to William Craig of Show Low, Arizona. Later that day, Clarissa Wilcken of Mesa, Ariz ona drifted off the road just south of Three Lakes and rolled her car onto its top. The next day Muriel Mazoyer of France made an extremely intendintorocdwest State Road 14 Chad Humphries During the period from June assisted KCSO on an attempted 25 through July 1, 1999, the suicide at the jail. Luckily the semi sus- tained veiy little damage, but there was quite a bit of damage to the car driven by Mr. Mazoyer. All is well that ends well, because there were no injuries sustained in the three accidents. Trooper Nordfelt was called out early on the morning of June 16th to investigate a head-o- n collision involving a semi and a passenger car at milepost 45. Luckily for Rorando Boone and his two passengers, the driver of the semi was very professional and alert and went clear off the road trying to avoid the collision. As it was, Mr. Boone hit the back tandem axle on the semi trailer. It was enough to save their lives, but it was violent enough that it ripped off both doors on the drivers side. After being checked out at the hospital, Mr. Boone was booked into jail on charges of DUI, posses- sion of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, open con- - Warrant. James R.
