Show Feature Memorial Day: By Myma Cox This Memorial Day is a quiet reminder of the loved ones whom we miss, those special persons who have gone on, still live on in our hearts and our thoughts. Time may diminish the memories, but the love we feel is forever. Even after our eyes grow dim, those loving feelings are still real to us. This Memorial Day I wish to pay tribute to some of those persons who have touched my life in a very special way. Of course its impossible to mention everyone, but several persons stand out in my mind. I pay tribute to some of them: Glenn Reidhead: As a home health aide, I grew to love Glenn dearly, and will never forgrt the impact he made on my life. He will never be forgotten.' Aunt Betty Esplin: Whos cookies and sweetness found their way to so many homes and touched so many lives. To Amy Levangen My mother-in-lawhos life was so exemplary to all of us who came in contact with this precious lady. John Cox: My son, whos very spirit inspires and urges me to do better works. w SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MAY 26. 1999 A 25 day to remember loved ones Justin Lamb: Who never knew Beyond that great sunrise any racial prejudices, whos tender spirit touched others. The three-da- y weekend is tradition- ally celebrated with family outings and other special events. And there is nothing wrong with having fun on Memorial Day. But let us not forget that this patriotic holiday is also a day to honor our nations armed services personnel killed in wartime. It is the custom for most Americans to spend a portion of this special day placing flowers and flags on the graves of those who have died in the service of their country. Some also attend worship services, parades and listen to patriotic speeches. Memorial Day, originally diers and sailors of The American Revolutionary War, the War' of 1812, the U. Memorial Day has become a day to honor all Armed Forces personnel who have lost their lives in the quest for freedom. In 1882 Decoration Day was changed to Memorial Da'. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday. Memorial Day is celebrated in almost every state on the last Monday in May. Confederate Memorial Day is still celebrated in a few southern states in April. Yet, no one is quite sure just how or when this day came about. What we do know is this: The Civil War lasted four long years. At the end of the bitter struggle between the North and the South, there was hardly a small town or city in the land that didnt have a soldier to mourn. The North lost 365,000 soldiers, the South 258,000. Its been written that the Civil War was one of the worst wars fought by the people of this nation. The Spanish-America- called Decoration Day, was first observed on May 30, 1868 to honor Northern soldiers who had died in the Civil War. General John Alexander Logan, commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans of the Civil War, selected that date because it was the day that the last soldier of the Union Army mustered out. In both bigeities and small communities, parades w'ere formed and flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate war pitted brother against soldiers. After a time, people be- brother.
