In a letter distributed at the Travel Council meeting, the singing group expressed, We are exploring the feasibility of bringing our Branson Show to your area. The letter went on to state, We see the possibility of Kanab becoming the Branson of the West, another center of wholesome, family entertainment. There will be an ad in the Spectrum and the Southern Utah News with a coupon giving a discount to adults. If enough support is given by locals and tourists, the Duttons would consider Kanab as their summer home for entertainment as early as 1999. It is the goal of the Travel Council to educate new tour guides, showing them points of interest and facts about our area. Last month, tourist specialist Greg Aikenhead met with the first group to participate in this program. There was apparently a gap in communications from both parties involved, making the efforts less than anticipated. The tour group made some plans for themselves as well as having their own idea of what the instruction should be. Kane County Travel specialists had a somewhat different idea of tour related education in mind. Both parties learned from their first experience and will move forward with the plans. Donna Casebolt, Assistant Travel Information Director, has' been looking into welcome signs for cities within Kane County. Each sign would display the city name and city theme. The suggestion was placed before the council for consideration in the 1999 budget. Travel Council employees will be hosting approximately 150 people from the House of Representatives and Senate. The group will begin their tour in Garfield County, ending their southern Utah experience with Kane County. Casebolt has Please join group tours lined up that should spark the many diversified interests within the group. The tours will be in part to show what Kane County has to offer, and introduce the representatives to the impact that their decisions have on rural communities and what those impacts may be. Some points of interest that have been slated are; a hike to Cascade Falls, views of petroglyphs, horseback rides, golfing, workshops of area closures by the BLM and a tour of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Director of Travel Information Steve Puro reported that there were 873 visitors to the Information Center in the month of July in 1997. Those figures rose to 1174 in 1998. These figures relate into an increase in visitation of 36 over last year. Puro went on to say that the center has extended their summer hours to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturdays. Fourteen percent of tourist traffic was credited to the extended hours during weekdays. Aikenhead was hosted to a trip to Rubicon, a four wheel drive event. Aikenhead will be organizing a similar event for Kane County in 1999. He has now been introduced to the right people and has a better idea of what is needed to put together a successful event. A hiker himself, Aikenhead was impressed by the concern and effort the drive enthusiasts go to prevent damage on terrain. Connie Goulding spoke before the council to explain the first annual Long Valley Pioneer Days festival. It is Long Valleys intent to start their activities in Alton, with events that will take those that par- eventually to a pageant, written and performed by local talent. It is a huge undertaking, it sounds like however Goulding and the Valley have their acts together. Puro explained that he and his staff have completed the leg work necessary for the Kane County website. The compiled data has been turned over to T.J. Houston, who will be responsible for getting everything on line. of SpeJohn Cotrell, cial Tees, addressed the council with a suggestion concemingthe new Rock Church sign. Cotrell, council members and the general public felt the current sign is quite attractive. However, Cotrell suggested the sign should mention its host county. Council members agreed that Kane County should appear on the sign and stated they would take the suggestion back to the Rock Church committee. Council member Dennis Judd outlined some tentative scheduling for the Western Legends Round-up- . There will be a minimum of 20 major cowboy poets and 10 musical groups. Legends is scheduled for September 9, 10 and 11, 1999. It is a tremendous undertaking with three full days and nights of entertainment. There will be fiddle contests, professional square dancing, parades and special events for younger people. Legends also proposes to begin, in 1999, a Walk of Fame. There will be brass plates placed in a walkway area. The first two plates to kick off its first year will be Tom Mix for Deadwood Coach and John Wayne for Big Trail.
