Photo by Sandy Knolls. Johnson Lake Trail Ride supreme By Sandy Knolls Off to the south, out over the Kaibab, clouds, dark gray thick clouds, rolled eastward as thun- der rumbled and echoed along its course. Five miles up Johnson Canyon, under clearing skies, 41 cowboys, cowgirls, city slickers and wannabees spurred their horses up the dusty sagebrush and juniper covered hills as crows circled overheard, rabbits scurried from bushes and deer bounded ahead. As the riders traveled through some of the Greatest Earth On Show toward Johnson Lake, a dozen hands toiled around the chuckwagon to prepare the tastiest roast beef with barbeque sauce, Dutch oven potatoes, salad and rolls a cowboy on the trail has ever eaten. The riders arrived an hour before dinner was ready, so there 644-210- 4. Neighborhood i April 26 - yOUR Best Frlesids ke was time to socialize and visit. As dinner was served, a nasty dark cloud snuck over the sandstone ledge and dumped a 20 minute hailstorm on the scene, but it failed to dampen any spirits. Following the social hour and feast, the riders mounted their horses for the ride back out under cool but clearing skies. In spite of a few frisky moments, no cowboys nor dudes were thrown from their saddles, although rumors of sore knees and tender fannies abounded. Saying By Michael Mountain-Edito- r Best Friends Magazine I cant think of many pop stars who have achieved anything very meaningful after their fame has peaked, but Paul McCartney is certainly an exception. How did that come about? The key phrase that summed up the Beatles philosophy was probably All You Need Is Love. It made a great song, but Paul was never going to be able to fulfill his dream of a world of love through the Beatles. So, instead of frittering away his huge success and wealth on the kind of empty life that most famous entertainers choose, he listened to his heart and to his own message, and married Linda. She changed his life. Linda knew that true love is but not about about kindness to others. In particular, she cared about being kind to animals, and her love of animals was soon rubbing off on Paul. They settled down in the country to build a family that included children and animals and a real closeness to nature. Paul describes how, one evening over the dinner table quite early in their marriage, they decided to move to a more vegetarian self-gratificati- & May 16 to Linda good-by- e The Kane County Narcotics Strike Force Spring Maternity Sale ' (Uc'rc KND-T- V Presents lifestyle. Linda later wrote veggie cookbooks, and Paul be- came a spokesperson for animal welfare groups on both sides of the Atlantic. When Linda died ofcancer last week, Paul invited people who wanted to do something in memory of his wife to make a contribution to help end the suffering of animals. Throughout their years together, Paul and Linda were at the forefront of a new culture of kindness that has a lot to offer us all as we enter a new millennium! Compassion for other living beings, respect for nature, and learning to treat others as we ourselves would want to be treated, are the hallmarks of that new culture. If these virtues of kindness and compassion could be found in embryo in that key phrase of the Beatles, All You Need Is Love, its antithesis, interest- ingly enough, could be seen in the key phrase of their equal and opposite rock group, The Rolling Stones, whose philosophy on life is summed up in the title: I Cant Get No Satisfaction. As the 20th Century rounds out, these two opposite world views, prophetically spelled out back in the sixties, are still beckoning us in their opposite directions. Will our society take its wealth and success and power, and proceed on down the road of to endless oblivion? Or will kindness and compassion win the day and open the door to realizing the dream of a world of love? People who embody that spirit of kindness can help us all to realize our higher dreams. Paul counted himselfaveryluckyman. He said of Linda, She was the kindest woman I have ever met the most innocent ... We said that all we wanted for the kids was that they would grow up to have good hearts, and they have ... The tribute she would have liked best is for people to save animals from the cruel treatment our society and traditions force upon them ... Finally I said to her: Youre up on ycur beautiful Appaloosa stallion; its a fine spring day; were riding through the woods. The bluebells are out and the sky is clear blue.
