Kanab Variety Arts Council The public should know Dear Editor: As the Kane County Road Department Supervisor, I feel the need to let the public know that I am trying to do the best to use our tax dollars as wisely as possible. The road department has a responsibility to maintain roads throughout the county in populated areas and in the vastness of the Monument area of the county. These roads are at times completely washed out or severely tore up to the point that travel is limited. We are often called upon to go to wildland fires and these can often be in the roughest terrain in our county. We are able to haul 100 gallons of diesel fuel to refill equipment along with assorted oil, tools and other necessary items in order to do our road maintenance. These loads are close to 1200 to 1300 lbs., just to be able to do our daily tasks. The power stroke diesel truck is one of the best tools for our trade. As part of our job we are often hauling several thousand pound loads consisting of cattle guards, preformed cement for cattle guard supports and various sizes of culverts along with large heavy equipment tires and rims. We at the road department try very hard to get the best afford-- , able price we can on these vehicles. We have used the Utah State Bid Program to our advantage and are able to get extremely good deals because we are a government organization. The trucks we use are from 3.3 years old to the newest crew cab which is five months old. This is probably the most expensive vehicle we have, but serves a very special purpose for hauling the entire crew and fuel when needed. After we are done setting up this vehicle, we will be able to do emergency work such as tire repair, welding repairs, along with normal maintenance, which we encounter in our routine or emergency work. This once again will save a lot of time and money on down time equipment repairs. We were able to get this vehicle at a very reduced rate because of the State Bid Program. This is a $35,000 vehicle to you or me, but because of the State Bid Program, we were able to buy this vehicle at $27,000. I would say we saved a substantial amount and could recoup most of this if it was resold after 4 years. It may look like we have four or five new vehicles, which is a compliment as we try to keep these vehicles in as good of condition as possible, consideringthat they are used daily for construction purposes along with being towed behind road graders. Two of these trucks are going on four years old, which is a lot newer than the Assessor or Building Inspectors current vehicles. I would admit that the current vehicles they use should be upgraded and maybe their budget doesnt make it possible. Nearly all of our funds in our budget are from Utah State B&C road funds and can only be used for public road maintenance, equipment and all other road related items. We do not compete for any funds which come out of the 3-- County General Fund as the leukemia not returning. I am still on an immune supSheriff, Building Inspector and Assessor office have to use. We pressing drug to prevent rejecare able to turn our last very tion, so I have to wear a mask dependable truck to the court- while in public places to reduce house for the Buildings and the risk of illness. Thanks again Grounds Department to use for for all of the help weve received their maintenance needs. They from the community, friends and were required to reimburse our family.
