The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is raising the speed limit to 65 mph on US 163 and SR 389 in northern Arizona. All speed limit sign changes on US 163 from the Navajo community of Kayenta to the Utah state line were made Tuesday, February 10. All speed limit sign changes along SR 389, from Fredonia to Colorado City, were made on Thursday, February 12. Dennis Kiefer, traffic studies analyst for ADOT based in Flagstaff, said the new 65 mph speed limit change was made because recent evaluations showed motorists are currently driving at 65 mph or higher without adversely affecting safety. Additionally, the transition to 65 mph is logical because the routes continue into Utah where the speed limit is 65 mph on noninterstate highways, he said. Kiefer said raising the speed limits on highis in 65 line to with mph ways the national trend since the federal mandate for 55 mph was lifted in 1996. non-intersta- smm ranter? uMiv ct . re-2- 5, mis-Februar- Put the gs ht Kane County Sheriffs Office, the Kanab City Police Department and the Utah Highway Patrol.
