'C Park Ranger Pat stated that the victim was hiking with her husband James on the approach trail to Observation Point at the upper end of Zion Canyon, approximately three miles hum Weeping Rock. Apparently her husband was hiking in front and did not see her fall. There were no other witnesses. The accident is being jointly U6nil Park Rangers. Sheriff Deputy Dan Endter reported Bottarini fell approximately 600 feet-anthat her death was instantaneous. The body was recovered by Zion's technical rescue team, and a cadre of four volunteers and was turned over to Spilsbuiy Mortuary of Hurricane. This is the third accidental fatality in Zion this year. None were reported in 1996. Fire season starting early There are presently five different fires burning near Zion National Park: the North Fork Fire, Deep Creek Fire, Kolob Creek Fire, Cogswell Point Fire and Gordon PointCcrral Canyon Fire. The North Fork Fire is 34 mile east cftheNE corner ofZion and is unaocessible to fire engines. The Deep Creek Fire is only 20 acres, burning on BLM land in a Wilderness Study Areajust north of Zion. Kolob Creek Fire is currently at 200 acres on BLM land, 34 mile north of Zion. There are two fire engines and 0 person crews fighting that blaze. The Gordon Point and Corral Canyon Fires, both on private land, have bu rned together and cover approximately 400 acres.
