Show SOUHEEN UTAH NEWS Opinion 4 WEDNESDAY MAT7.1S97 Dixie Speaks On seatbelt use and potentially avoidable tragedy girl died this weekend-- a terrible tragedy. At that age your life is just beginning, and the whole world is out before you. And then in a brief, tragic second, all is gone. The family is left with empty hearts and years of agonizing grief. But what if the A fifteen year-ol- d v : untimely death could've been prevented by wearing a seatbelt? The tragedy becomes even greater. The Southern Utah News applauds Kanab High School Principal Dr. Lynn McArthur and the Utah Highway Patrol, for having the fortitude to display the mangled vehicle in front of the high school. Anyone looking at the car had to be profoundly affected, knowing the two passengers wearing seatbelts had lived through the accident, and the one person who died didn't. Special respect should be extended to the girl's father Mr. Lamph, who was willing in a time of unimaginable personal sorrow, to care about others enough to do something that could possibly save someone else's life. Several complained that displaying the car was morbid. What's morbid is that a beautiful 15 year-ol- d girl won't be alive to go to prom, graduate, get married, experience the joy of birth, or live life to the fullest. I hope a few people do have nightmares after seeing the car. Perhaps then, all of this will become real. If displaying that car causes even one person to fasten their seatbelts, the brutreminder of life's fragility was. worthwhile. Fastening a seatbelt won't kill you, not ' wearing one might A friend once told me that when you lose a parent or spouse, you lose a part of your present. But when you lose a child, you lose a part of your future, something that can never ever be replaced. The Southern Utah News urges drivers to fasten their seatbelts and not jeopardize their precious futures. ; Letters to the Editor What is your opinion?
