Biologists plan to hold the giant birds in a release facility atop the cliffs for several weeks before they are released in separate groups, eventually bringing the total number of California condors in the Southwest Grand Canyon country to a total of 14. (One of the six condors released last December was later killed by an eagle). The latest round of condors transported from Los Angeles will be significantly different from those released late last yean they are older, they are accomplished fliers and all have been reared by humans. "Our hope is that these birds will mix with the five condors who already call the Vermillion Cliffs area home," said the Service's Southwest Regional Director, Nancy Kaufman. The condors released last December were raised by their parents, and a team of State, Fed- tinue experimenting and observing while we work toward establishing a goal of 150 condors in the wild in the Southwest," said Bill Burnham, PH.D., President of The Peregrine Fund. The Peregrine conservaFund is a tion organization conducting the release in northern Arizona. Condors require six years to reach reproductive maturity, and a successful release of old birds might significantly advance the date that condors could be producing chicks in the wild. The release of California condors in Arizona is a cooperative project among the U.S. fish and Wildlife Service, the Peregrine Fund, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the Utah Department ofNatural Resources, the Hualapai Tribe, the Navajo Nation, the Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Diego Zoos, the Bureau ofLand Management, Glen Canyon National Recreation non-prof- The Service Officer from the American Legion, Salt Lake City will be in your area to assist you in understanding and applying for VA benefits, including compensation, pension, hospitalization, education, and other benefits.
