As you walk across the carpet, cracked nutshells and Christmas tree needles, imbed in your feet. Its that special time between Christmas and New Years when the high flying spirit of the holiday season has crashed. Theres an undeniable letdown that comes after Christmas. Maybe its a natural bodily reaction to intense holiday emotions, or simply because all the charge cards are over limit. Many of us wind up feeling a little like Frosty the Snowman upon hearing theres going to be a heat spell. But cheer got a brand New Year ahead! What could be more excitingthan havinga whole new year to look forward to? Im not a big resolution person, because quite frankly, I dont like failure. Lets just say isnt a strong suit. Let me illustrate. I believe that penning your daily thoughts not only helps a person evaluate daily experiences, but is emotionally therapeutic. Last year, I decided to commit to wTiting in a daily journal. O.K., weve got the resolution, lets see how well I did keeping it. The following are actual entries excerpted from my e completed memoirs. December 28, 1995 Many times Ive started, many times Ive quit. So is the history of my journal writing up until now. I want to document things that happen and have a medium for expressing my innermost thoughts (that is of course, if I have any!) Who knows? Maybe this time Ill stick to it. January 1, 1996 Welcome to 1996! A new year holds so much hope and promise. I welcome the challenge of the year ahead. Im resolving to be a better mother, write in this book as often as I can, be kinder to others and, last but not least, up-we- ve self-discipli- ne yet-to-b- occasionally dust the living room. For a joke one of the boys dated the dust I had on a coffee table, and lo and behold the last entry was November 1! January 2, 1996 Ive been spendingthe last two days writing stories for this weeks SUN. Its been kind of dead around here, a story is the most exciting thing that I have to write about. Oh well, so much is the excitement in the life of Dixie Dull. dog-at-lar- ge January 3, 1996 Utm sit-do- p, 7 sfcO (B Ijh I HAPPY NEW YEAR! May the coming year be fruitful in every way (pun intended)! With the end of this 1996 year Id like to express my appreciation to all you faithful readers who have spoken so kindly to me about this column over these almost four years. Its doubtful that anyone will ever know whether or not there has been any good come from what has been offered here. However, it truly has been a satisfying effort on my part to share with you the knowledge and understanding I have gained, as Ive been schooled through trial and error on the subject of organic gardening, that I have wholeheartedly embraced for more than twenty years. Its been a practice that has brought to me a sureness of the principles of gardening as nature intended. All growing things, plants, animals, all creatures great or minute, within the earth, on, and above, as well as we ourselves have a purpose for being here. As we, the higher species recognize this and choose to be good stewards, allowing each to accomplish their pur !! pose by working in harmony one with another, wonderful pleasant things can occur. Man has a tendency when gaining knowledge to think himself very wise. So wise as to try to replace nature in various ways. Though he may even use forms of natural elements, furnishing the necessary nutrients plants need. Hes unable to duplicate in the laboratory the intricate processes that quietly take place under ground; the workings ofthe bacteria, actino-mycetfungi, etc. creatures deliberately placed there for the very purpose of sustaining life and health to plants. When synthetic fertilizers are put in the soil, death comes to these creatures. For they cannot live in an unnatural environment. In this, e, mans efforts work against, rather than with nature. Even those insects that bring us challenges in raising food and beauty are provided as a source for those species of insects placed here, that will support us in our gardening efforts, as we support their role in natures scheme! life-sustaini- (DGfiGDD(DQiIIl2S2D (MS Kanab Tire Center 5.
