Show Sports Lynx drop one to Orme - 55 to 38 By Kent Mason My mistake, sorry. Last week I said this would be the first conference game of the year for the Lynx. Turns out their first conference game will be October 4 at home against St. Michael. This Lynx team of 1996 seems to be a group of young men searching for an identity. Who are we and what can we do? Friday night at Orme the offense riding on the ball carrying ability of Justin Mackelprang and the throwing arm of Nate Black made the statement loud and clear. This is who we are! Justin carried the ball 33 times for a total of 176 yards while Nate was 12 for 24 in passing for a total of 176 yards. The Lynx gained a total of 391 yards from scrimmage and scored six touchdowns but lost the game by 17 points. which we did not see in the three previous games. Three times in this game the Orme ball carrier was out in the clear with nothing between him and the goal line but green grass only to have a Lynx defender run him down and tackle him from behind. Giving me the feeling that the defense is very close to making a statement much like that made in the game by the offense. Even though they lost, the Lynx team which played in this game was most certainly a different team from the team that played the previous three games. This week they play Mayer at home (a game), their Homecoming game. On October 4 they host St. Michael in their first conference game of the year. They then host Chinle in a game on October 5. The feeing after the Orme game was, Some of the pieces of the puzzle are now in place and the rest are oh so close. The Lynx and their fans hope this is non-conferen- ce non-conferen- ce In spite of 18 tackles by Jared Black and 10 tackles and one quarterback sack by Justin Mackelprang, the defense was porous and allowed way too true. many long running plays. The journey of a defending Yet we saw something from the Lynx defense in this game champion is never easy. Watch for continued from this senior. October 11 found the team competing in North Sevier on a new course now known as Hernia Hill. The first half of the course was definitely uphill all the way. The Kanab team had been working hard all week and the results paid off, with all but three improving their times on a much tougher course. Finishing in first place was the boys team from 3A Delta, with nine runners getting ribbons in the top 20 places of varsity and junior varsity. Glen Tucker, this weeks MOST DEDICATED RUNNER, moved up to a seventh place ribbon, while knocking 53 seconds off his prior weeks time. Chelsea MacDonald continued to make a name for herself in the girls division, placing fifth overall. Because we do not have a full girls team, Chelsea knows she must place in the top ten at region to qualify for state. With her determination and work ethics, she will continue to improve. Who is that kid? was heard at the finish line as Travis Fox crossed in 13th place. A newcomer to the game, Travis is turning some heads as he continues to come closer to one of the top ten rib- bons. Along with Glen and Travis, Paul Robinson, Merrill Jones, Kyle Avery, Matt Kelly and Andy Crosby finished as our top seven runners. Running in regular street shoes, he crossed 37th out of 68 runners. If his blisters heal, watch for this young man to be bringing home a few ribbons himself in the weeks ahead. The MOST IMPROVED award goes to Jessie Arbogast who took 4:01 off his P.R. The snllle on his face told you it was fun to let others see the back of his shirt as he sprinted across the finish line. Watch for this team to be training along roadsides, on sand dunes, in creek beds and over hills as they try to qualify for the state meet in Sugar House Park in October. We can always use more on our team, so get off the couch and join us. You go to practice and you get to run, it is a win, win sport all the way.
