SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 1996 Lynx roll to first victory of 1 996 over Milford I By Kent Mason The Lynx scored a touchdown and a two-poiconversion on each of their first three possessions Friday against Milford to lead 24-- 0 with 9:22 to go in the second quarter on their way to a 52-1- 2 rout of the Tigers. Just before the halftime break, the Tigers had the ball and it looked like the Lynx had them stopped when a penalty gave them a first down. They ran for a first down to the Lynx four yard line. Then they faced a second down at the one foot line. The Lynx defense dug in and held them out of the end zone on second and third, but they managed to punch it in on fourth down and the Lynx led 24-- 6 at halftime. The second half was more of the same with the Lynx scoring four contouchdowns and two versions. The Tigers scored one touchdown against the Lynx JV defense late in the fourth quarter. The Black brothers, Nate and Jared, had nine tackles each to lead the defense. Quarterback Nate led the offense with 100 yards rushing. Everyone on the squad got in the act in this one. It was the kind of game the Lynx needed after the beating they took last week. Linemen dont get much notoriety, but Brandon Tait should be mentioned in connection with this victory. He had a lot to do with the outcome. The job the linemen do never gets in the nt stats, but without them no team would win. So thanks to Brandon and the others on the line for a job well done. After their victory over Milford Friday, the Lynx could have used a little time to lick their wounds, but that was a luxury they didnt have. A short 18 hours later, they were back on the field getting ready to face the Panthers of Alamo, Nevada, with two key players out due to injuries. Evan Sadlier had a broken arm and Jared Black a sprained ankle. The Panthers scored on their first play from scrimmage to lead 0 after 16 seconds of play. The Lynx answered with a touchdown of their own, plus a successful two-poiconversion to lead 6 to with 8:32 go in the first quarter. The Panthers, not to be outdone, came right back down and scored, conversion to adding a two-poilead 14-- 8 at the 4:29 mark. At this point, it looked like the game would be a scoring race. All offense and little defense. The Lynx kept the trend going by scoring on their next possession but took a little longer doing it to tie the score at 14 all with 1 1: 19 to go before halftime. On their next possession, the Panthers failed to score, losingthe ball on a fumble on their own 38 yard line. After exchanging possessions, theLynx drove andscored to go into halftime with a 20-1- 4 lead. Nobody could move the ball in the third quarter.
