Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY APRIL 17, 1996 Opinion 4 Dixie Speaks Kanab City has owned its own power company for nine years. The 1987 purchase came about over frustration with the company which formerly serviced the area. The city felt that the benefit of owning its own company was autonomy, minimal government involvement, and eventual profit. The city council names a power board which recommends policy and rates for council approval. But having its own power company has been somewhat of a "shocking" experience for the city. The power board has attempted to purchase the cheapest electricity and control costs, but there are long term contracts to deal with, not to mention metr and billing questions. The power board should be commended for their hard work and long hours at a somewhat thankless job. Two good companies, Garkane Power and Dixie Escalante, have made offers to purchase Kanab' s utility. And even if the city decides to sell to one of them, it won't happen overnight. State law restrictions on municipal power system sales and legalities dealing with a 1994 bond refinancing, will pose major challenges that'll take time to sort through. We urge the power board and the city to carefully consider their options, and then select the company that will best serve Kanab. The lower rates that these comeconomic panies can offer, will provide a much-neede- d development tool, as well as a economic break to Kanab City residents. We encourage the city of Kanab to get out of the power business. Letters to the Editor What is your opinion? This newspaper welcomes opinions from its readers concerning any subject. Thanks for making life a little easier Dear Editor and Friends: I wanted to make this a very special letter to the very special people who thought of me when I was hurt. I just couldnt believe how good everyone was, sending me cards, bringing me flowers, coming by to cheer me up, bringing me tasty things to eat. It made me feel loved and a part of a very kind, loving community. Lets remind Mrs. Burgin that she is the one who proclaims particular people and that she and the rest of the Council are the ones who consistently disregard others opinions and concerns. I guess this town has finally d caught on to a stubborn City Council, and maybe people are waiting for the next election, and some Council members that respect all people with different points of view in this diverse community. We have learned much the past few weeks. Mostly we have learned that we are very fortunate to live among such genuinely kind and caring people. We indeed have very special thoughts and memories of our mother, and we are pleased to learn of the love many of you have expressed for her. The Front Seat writer accuses the Kanab City Council of infantile and undignified behavior because they are not interested in listening to Ken Rait. Well, Mr. Rait is the man who made the statement, It wasnt the environmentalists who closed the local sawmills, it was Boise Cascade and the Oregon sawmills. If this is an indication of Mr. Raits intelligence, then I can certainly understand why the Kanab City Council is not interested in wasting their time listening to him, and I applaud them for the stand they have taken on this. In talking about lumber mills and coal mines, the Front Seat writer says, These industries interest in have no long-term.
