Matson recounted the steps which led to the public hearing and laws governing the creation of this type of recreation district. A number of people spoke in favor of the district. Kanab City Councilwoman Macy Burgin said the city was in favor of its formation. Councilman Roger Holland said that the district would be a winwin program for the county and city. Karen Alvey, who spoke as of the Kanab regional Chamber of Commerce, said co-ch- air that they supported the district as a means to promote tourism and economic development. Lynette Jones of the Tri Valley Rodeo Association supports not just the rodeo grounds, but the whole complex. Todd Macfarlane said that he supported creation of the district for economic and cultural reasons. He added that the work W.EJLT. Garkane makes power offer too By Dixie Brunner The Garkane Power Association has made an offer to purchase the Kanab City Electric System. Garkane currently services the Kanab Creek Ranchos, and has an option for Kanab and areas immediately westnorth and east of the community. Garkane presented two purchase options to the power board and city, the first being a complete system acquisition. In this plan, Garkane would acquire the entire system including all physical facilities, inventory, customers and contracts. They would assume Kanab Citys contract with Deseret G&T upon its approval, and refinance the 1993 bond issue. Garkane said that Kanab City Electric customers w'ould see an immediate reduction in their power bills. Under its second option, Garkane would expand services currently provided under existing operations and maintenance agreement. With this plan, Kanab City would retain ownership of the system. The city would benefit from any profit See COMMISSION, Page 20 made by the system, but also bear any loss. Kanab has been in the power business since 1987, and has recently been approached by Dixie Escalante REA to sell its system. State law restrictions on power system sales dictate that whatever Kanab City decides to do, it may take some time. The Kanab City Power Board will be meeting on Thursday, April 18 to discuss their options and any possible action that they will be taking at this time. KANAB WEATHER April Courtesy.
